Hey guys,
this is a hard one for me. I can't decide which of the two (a full tang kukri by HI) I should get as my go-to-big-knife.

I even made a list assigning points for:

Usability (1-5 points, with 1 being totally useless outdoors and 5 being the ultimate chopping tool / big survival knife), stability (if I had to rely on only that one knife for the rest of my life, which one would never fail me, 1-5 points), looks (1 = looks crap, 5 = doesn't get any better than this), self defense usability (1 = useless as a self defense tool, 5 = this is a knife you can bring to a gun fight).

When I say self defense I mean a scenario where I'm somewhere in the wilderness and might have to scare away a bear or other predators, I certainly don't see myself running around town with a big ass knife on my belt :D

funny thing is, they both got the same number of points on my list, however I don't want to buy both.

which one would you get?

Well which one do you look at and go "I HAVE to have that knife!"? Many times it comes down to personal preference I KNOW both will last you a long looonnggggg time and both will (probably) do the same job just as well as the other.

I say for chopping and self defense the kukri wins hands down.....if you look at the history of them, there very versatile and have been used for bolth the things you mentioned for hundreds of years.

Having a Himalayan Imports Kukri (I believe it's a "Deradune" model), I can say the kukri will very likely outchop the Von Tempsky. But in reality, I would just get whichever you like better. I think the Von Tempsky is extremely cool, and I'm sure the fit and finish will be quite a bit better (just a product of how HI's products are made). The Von Tempsky may also do other "knife tasks" a bit better. Using a kukri to cut things, not chop them, can be quite a task sometimes.

I own some nice large knives and the Von T being one of them. BEST bowie I've ever owend bar none. keepem sharp

I have had HI Kuk's too, didn't like them as well as Mr. VonT. You might though.

I have both. For ease of use i would go with the VT, because of the straight edge it us much easier to sharpen than the inside curve of the kukri.

i own both, for pure chopping power the HI ang,but i like to carry the VT in the bush.its more of a multi-user for me.it chops very well, stick pigs, baton wood, even skinned a pig with it(not the greatest, but it worked),an it wont kill your arms as much clearing light brush then the HI would.

great, now you've hyped me up even more for the VTB and I ordered one with African Wenge handles. Apparently, there are 2 (?) versions, one with 4mm thickness and one with 6.5mm.

If that's true, FortyTwoBlades, that there are new ones on the horizon, then this might not have been my last big knife purchase. I LOVE Svord knives!

This.
I havent yet got a Von Tempsky, but hopefully soon. That would be my choice.

Von Tempsky is one of the best choppers I've ever had, and very versatile knife. Kukri is pretty much just chopper, and not very comfortable for me personally.

It's true. I've seen pics. Also a big fat dagger that reminds me strongly of a cinquedea. Same handle as the VTB but the guard isn't curved. Also there's a "Giant Peasant Knife" coming out soon but I haven't seen pics. Big price jump from the standard models which makes me curious as to if it's a serious tool or a marketing aid.
