Hey everyone, new to the forums and just wondering what your thoughts are on the battle rat? I know someone selling a new never used one for a decent price, but cant seem to find any info on them. The website has no listing for it either. Any owners out there that can share their opinion on this knife?

Also what is a fair price to pay for one?

thanks

Battle Rat is an old design that was produced in limited quantity, so secondary market is the only way to get one.
Having said that, if you head to Scrap Yard site they have a 9-11 model which is very close to Battle Rat. Main differences are 9-11 is slightly narrower, has more aggressive point and doesn't have differential heat treatment.
Price wise... That is up to you...

I picked up a used one for a good price not too long ago. Awesome knife! Res-C chopper that is hard to beat. Feels very nimble in the hand for a knife of it's size. If you can get one at a price you feel good about do it. If not I second the 9-11 recommendation. That's what I was going to get before the BR fell into my lap.

I love mine. It's my go to chopper and all I really need in a bigger knife.

Nothing currently made has a differential heat treat. Ratweiler, Chopweiler, and Battle Rat had it I know and I'm sure other people here can add to the list. I kind of doubt we'll see any more knives made with the differential heat treat but I'd love to be wrong.

Good to know. I thought the 911 and Rodent 9 was Differential heat treated but I thought wrong. Why did they stop treating blades that way?

Anytime I see a post count below 10 asking for price info., my first thought is of a seller looking for information to help sell an item. Am I wrong?

Yes your wrong. I am just wondering what a like new never used one would sell for just to make sure im not paying too much. Also what is the difference in the Differential heat treated model? Im just having trouble finding info on this knife is all.

I've seen 'em go new for $225. Heck, I've sold 'em new for less than that :D I'm sometimes stupid though. Anywhere between 200-300 is probably good--depending on you and what you feel is fair and how badly you want that "old school" mystique and dif treated steel (assuming it's a dif treated model).

Not all BRs are dif treated though. I forget which ones weren't. The BR IS superior to the 911 IMO. It just feels better is all I can say. I like the extra heft and the more forward balance.

Other Df heat treated blades includ:

- Rat Daddy
- Rat Madstiff
- M9
- Battle Guard (I believe)
- M6
- Desert Jack
- Some of the Wakis (I believe)
- Chopweiler
- Ratweiler
- Taz Rat
- Was the Camp Tramp?

Did I miss anything?

Answered two of them for you, but I am also unsure when it comes to the Battle Gaurd.

To the new user, DHT is basicly the spine of the knife is hardened to a lower rockwell than the edge. It is suppose to allow more flex before breakage. The Swamp went away from DHT because there is literally no gain by doing it other than it looks really cool with a stripped blade when you can see the DHT lines.

The Battle Rat AND the Battle Guard are both differentially heat treated gentlemen. The tan handled black coated Battle Rats were the through hardened models. I think the Battle Rat is my favorite Bussekin knife of all time. DAMN bold statement, but its just perfect in my eyes. Not too big, not too heavy, differential SR-101, Res-C, and that old school black crinkle coat is impossible to wear off!! I will certainly take one to the grave with me.

I believe it was a price to performance trade off. It did significantly increase the price, but I don't think the performance increased enough to justify it.

Ohhhhh man, that is a hell of a lineup Russ!! You don't see too many Battle Guards around these days
