Swamp Rat Custom Shop is Excited to Introduce The Saddle Tramp. The Ultimate Cowboy Knife in SR-3V, Coming Tonight, 10-28-2025 at 9PM Eastern

When the idea for a Cowboy Knife was brought up I started down the path of "What is a Cowboy Knife and what would it need to do?" Having spent my entire life on a horse and cattle farm, I quickly realized that this knife is going to be put to use on a vast number of tasks. Some of these tasks are very specific to the ranch/farm world, while others could be construed as just typical EDC applications. It needs to be tough, sharp, smaller in size but not too small. A blade that can handle the abuse of dirt, rocks, wire fencing, blood, hair, etc.

I reached out to a lot of friends and business associates in the worlds of horses, cattle ranching, farming, rodeo and just all around "Cowboying".

This information is coming from various geographic locations and encompasses everything from working cattle ranches, large horse training and boarding facilities, to multiple thousand acre farms and professional rodeo circuits. These responses came from Montana, Missouri, Texas, New Mexico, Oregon, Ohio, Florida, Michigan and Wyoming, pretty much covering every environment that North American has to offer.

I asked these people to give me a week's worth of knife use in these different arenas.

In no particular order, here are the responses I received.

Knives were used for the following applications:

-Hoof cleaning and stone removal on both horse and cattle hooves.
-Making kindling for fire-starting.
-Removing burrs from manes and tails of horses.
-Cutting open hay bales and feed bags.
-Lancing wounds and performing castrations on both horses and cattle.
-Pounding through fence wire to repair electric fencing.
-Light digging and sod removal to drive fence posts.
-Removing ear tags from cattle as well as performing ear notching cuts.
-Cutting leather straps, poking holes in leather and cutting rawhide for saddle and leather tack maintenance and repairs.
-Cutting and removing weeds and branches interfering with electric fencing wires.
-Skinning, butchering, and processing both wild game and domestic meat producing livestock.
-General food prep. Slicing meat and vegetables.
-Cutting various treats for horse, apples, carrots, sugar beets, etc.
-Wire stripping and cutting hydraulic lines for tractor maintenance and repair.
-Opening buckets of oil and hydraulic fluid.
-General maintenance on tractors, balers, trucks, trailers and all terrain vehicles.
-Notching wood posts for fencing.
-Cut riggings and straps to save hung up cowboys at rodeos.
-Dispatching unwanted critters.
-Cleaning fingernails.

As you can see the uses of a "Cowboy Knife" can be vast and it needs to meet a large variety of tasks. Hopefully these guys are cleaning the knife between castrations and food prep!!!

Some of the desired criterias were:
-Large enough to handle daily chores while still being small enough to not impede movement in a saddle or when climbing in and out of vehicles and equipment.
-Handle that was comfortable in both bare hands as well as gloved hands.
-Large enough handles to provide a solid, full-hand grip, but not overly large to where it could get in the way.
-Sharp for various cutting applications without the need for constant resharpening.
-Enough of a point to do finer work.
-A handle that provides grip but is not overly aggressive to the point that it creates blisters or hot spots.
