So I just got my first HRLM and I love it but I sort of want to mod it out to make it more personal. I think the first step I want to do is strip the paint off and have a satin finish.
I noticed that there aren't screws holding the micarta to the tang but facets rather. Are these not meant to be taken apart if not is there a particular way to do it?

any help is appreciated
thanks so much

I have removed the scales on several of mine. But if you only want to strip the coating it is not necessary to remove the slabs. Just apply the stripper and wait a few minutes. It will not harm the micarta or G10.

One other consideration is that SR101 will gather surface rust fairly quickly if you don't keep it oiled... just consider that before stripping. If you keep it oiled it will be just fine.

If you decide to go ahead and remove the scales, here is a great thread with lots of info on it... good luck.

So lets say that I strip it but instead of oiling maybe apply some Perma blue? Would that help with the rust prevention or should i just go hoppe's 9 gun oil and just keep it oiled routinely?

thanks for the info

Sr101 will be prone to rust if not maintained. I like steel with a dark patina.

I actually do it intentionally on my higher carbon steel knives because I like the "old" look.

Infi I really don't worry about! I finally got a tiny spot of rust on the logo of a BAD (I got it wet, and went swimming with it on on a 2 day canoe trip......next time I cut anything with it, the discoloration went away).

Sr101 will be much more rust prone (or tarnish prone depending on what you do with it).

The tube rivets holding on the scales are only removable if you drill them out. Then you can replace them with new 1/4 inch stainless tube. Cut to the right length and flared out with screw heads (ghetto way to do it, deck screw heads cut off, and used with a vice to clamp them down to flare them).

Not super hard, but not for the faint of heart!

ok I got what your saying, now I just need to decide what to do. I have this spray on paint stripper, would it be a better idea to use a paste or gel or something along those lines?

thanks for the help.

Gel seams to work a bit better, I get mine at the depot

If you look through the back pages of this forum, you will find a HRLM and a RMD that were done by Norcalblacktail or Nate that will blow your mind and certainly give you a idea on what can be done.
