I've been looking for a good survival knife and stumbled on the Swamp Rat Rodent 6. It looks like it has what I'm after. Does anyone know if sharpening a convex grind is going to be an issue? Also can anyone recommend a place to get a good kydex sheath for this knife. Finally, is it true that these knives are hard to come by and if I want one I should place an order now?

I'll start from the back...
The knives are made in a limited time frame based on orders placed, if you wait too long you will have to rely on secondary market, or custom shop.
Kydex - Azwelke, Buy Brown, Steelnut, and recently drbanes (not 100% on the nick) are all avaliable here on the forum to contact.
Convex edge might be challenging, but if you don't try you'll never learn! There is plenty of view and info on doing/maintaining convex edge. And you can always reprofie the grind to standard v shape.
Few things you can bet on are that you'll get a workhorse of a knife, best customer service, and one of the most ergonomic handle designs ever!

Convex edges are very easy to maintain. They are also incredibly efficient cutting edges. I convex all my edges.

All mine get un-convexed as soon as I get them. Diamonds are a knifes best friend.

I don't know how to sharpen and just ordered and edge pro apex so I don't think that'll work for convexing.

Research is your friend! There will be as many votes for convex edge as against it. With EP you can easily lose the convex edge.

Anyone actually seen one in person yet? Other than the good folks at SRKW?

Pictures? (other than the SRKW web site?)

Anyone knows if spec-ops 6 inch sheath will be a good fit for Rodent 6?

It says blades up to 6 inches..
Well, the Rodent 6's proposed blade length is ~6.5", larger than that sheath is designed to handle. I switch off carrying a SYKCO 511 and an RMD (both ~5.5" blade) in the short combat master and those fit perfectly. There is a retention screw for the plastic liner 6" into the canvas, you need to keep your blade from impacting upon it. Theoretically the Rodent 6 is too large for one - UNLESS you get a custom liner for the short sheath that keeps the blade above the screw...

Hi Guys, I thought my favorite Swamp Rat was my Ratmandu, and it still one of them, so are my Rodent Solution, Rodent 4, Rodent 7, Rodent 9 and my Rucki, II'm not kidding their great, but I got this idea here reading on BladeForum, first of all I had it thinned down and it became a great slicer yet robust, then I had the top gaurd taken off and now it look's like a beefy Ratmandu on steriods it came out super, in fact you can't even tell it use to be a Rodent 6, I can honestly say it became my ALL time fav. it didn't cost that much I think it cost me about $30
00 extra the Custom Shop does great work Alex did a great job sharpening it and Trissy helped too to get it out just right for me, the people at Swamp Rat Custom Shop are Pros. If anyone is looking for a utility/camp knife, IMO think about customizing the Rodent 6 mine came out great taking the #1 spot away from still one of my fav's the Ratmandu. I hope this helped ,,, Paul'ie

When I receive my M9, I will try it as is for sure, but it will probably end up convex. All my outdoors knives are convex.

I kind of like the Rodent 6, but something about the way the micarta meets the blade guard area bothers me. To my eye, it's like the edge of the micarta isn't shaped properly to match the edge of the guard or something. But overall I do like it.

Just had a look and the micarta blends perfectly into the handle shape (to choke up using the choil) and to the shape of the knife.

I acquired a Custom Shop R6 from another of the Swamp Dwellers ;) and it is going to accompany me bush in a couple of weeks. It is like an RMD on 'roids and I find myself warming to it more and more...!!!

Andy I hope you do a review of it! I am especially interested in pics and a comparison to your ASH1. We know you love the ASH but how does the R6 compare in comfort and performance?
Thanks

I like this idea. Andy you can just tell us now that the R6 will be your new favorite. :p

.... did you fell that chill in the air..... ???? Must have been the first frost in HELL just forming.... ;) :p

Andy, I'm curious to know, do you even know how many ASH's you currently own? Did you ever have a brain fart and sell one? Regret it and trying to make it up to yourself?
Just kidding around Bro. Actually, you're one of my heros. You have a distinct appreciation of good blade steel and configurations. Everyone has a favorite!

I heard once that Andy posted his entire ASH collection for sale, then again the same person who told me this told me he had some ocean front property for sale in Ohio.
