Hey all,

Im looking for a high quality large survival knife that can take a lot of beating. Thinking of going for a rodent 9.

I would go for the esee junglas, but would prefer a heavier 1/4inch thick blade. (junglas has 3/16inch blade)

Any advice / opinions on swamp rat knives - is their quality on par with Esee's ?

I don't have any experience with the rodent 9, but I can tell you that my junglas is a chopping beast, yet still nimble enough for smaller tasks.

Swamp Rat is very high quality, on par with ESEE. The Rodent 9 is a new model and not many have had any experience with it yet, but Swamp Rat knives are great and very tough.

The Junglas will chop better but if you are looking for a one knife type set up the R9 is better at that. Both are fantastic knives I have used both and cant fault either one of them.

Yeah, im looking for a big knife rather then a machete. The swamp rat brand doesn't seem to have as much as a following compared to Esee.

You may be surprised to find out that Swamp Rat is part of a larger company called Busse Combat, and that it has a very large and loyal fan base.

I've been using Swamp Rat and other Busse family knives for nearly a decade, and I can vouch for them. They are nearly indestructible, have an unbeatable warranty and usually hold their value well, even when used hard. I don't think you will be disappointed in Swamp rat if you want a large knife.

Cheers bud, I think im gonna put in an order next week :)

I don't think you could go wrong with either. I picked the Rodent 9, But I will most likely get a junglas at some point. The R9 is a beast of a chopper and I have no regrets. The factory edge was pretty good, But I sharpen everything.

Personally, I think a 1/4" blade is like using bar stock to beat at bushes and trees. I have a Condor Golok that is a similar thickness, but longer, and it doesn't cut for s**t. The Junglas on the other hand is a cutting beast and is just as bombproof. Sometimes people get caught up in thinking their knife will break and sacrifice ease of use for a false sense of security. A knife will break if you abuse it past the point of reason. A knife will not break if you treat it rough but sensibly.
