So I see a nice price on E-Bay on a Howling Rat. It says it's a year old and has been sharpened once. Looks pretty, and I've been looking to beat up one of those Swamp products so I bid.
Curiosity gets the best of me and I e-mail the seller and ask "Just how hard was it to re-sharpen that SR-101 steel? And what did you use to reclaim the edge.
He answers me back with " I used some sandpaper and a computer mouse to do it. It was kind of hard and after a while I gave up. I read that method on Knife Forum."
:jerkit: :barf: :( I've already bid ...STOUT and he tells me he dragged sandpaper wrapped around a mouse to sharpen SR-101 steel on a knife.

It's down to the last 2 hours of auction and I get outbid!:D Thanks God... I think I can let that one go past. There will be another.
I get a pop up reminder from E-Bay my knife has 10 minuets left, I should hurry and rebid because I have been outbid.
I know all that! I am grateful! I go to My E-Bay. There it is.
And I've been outbid by a 14 feedback,by what a few bucks? Am I going to take that?!? BID Damn it BID goes through my mind. But ...... but remember the sandpaper? He also had been asked by another buyer "It looks like a left handed sheath is it?" Sultan of sandpaper said ,"I don't know,if you put it on your left side the spine is facing front, and on the right side the blade is facing front." I'm going to bid on a knife that had been owned for over a year by him if it kills me. I wait till my shots in sight.....36 seconds remaining BAM... I pull the trigger on MY MOUSE and send another bid racing into the internet.

"6 Seconds remaining you are the current high bidder!"

What have I done.:foot: presses F5....refresh occurs..Congratulations You are the WINNER of the Sandpaper Special. :o
Thank God for Blade Forum. A place where you can go to tell terror stories like this and the readers are actually compassionate about your blunder.

big sigh... his feedback is 100 %.......big sigh.......new knife by Thursday.....
I can fix it .....yes .. yes I can fix it. I too have sandpaper and discarded computer parts in my basement as well!:D

Thanks for your understanding,
Daddy

Sorry but this story is hilarious. See, I was that "14 feedback". LOL. It sounds like you are happy with what you got and what you paid. That's all that counts. Me? I was in watching a movie with my family and the auction ended @ 5 minutes before the end of the movie. No biggie--I knew about the timing, knew that I had bid my max, and perhaps most importantly my 11-year-old really wanted me to see the end of that movie with him. So if you ask me, I won too. Besides, I already have an HR and will be getting one with micarta slabs when they finally come out if by that time I don't have one or two more.

Enjoy your new knife and congrats. I am sure that guy you bought from could not have hurt it if he had tried.

well Juggalo, I was the guy that sold the knife (grg32) on ebay and I am sure I have not damaged the blade. I tried the sharpening method that was recommended for a convex edge and could not master it. I hope you have better luck, it is a great knife and I wish I could have learned more about sharpening it. I did remove the lanyard, but will gladly send it seperately if you want it. It wasn't expensive (maybe $2).....anyway, like I said in my PM, I will mail the knife tomorrow at lunch...good luck and do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions....G.

Juggalo,

If thats a Left Handed Sheath and you want to trade up for a RH sheath, drop me an e-mail. I got my HR in May and the sheath has seen little use. Still very tight and still the light tan color.

It is indeed a factory left handed holster. It is nicely broke in. It looks like it was worn every day for the last year. It is the dark... almost Mahogany color sheath, every thread is INTACT and the Howling Rat CAN NOT be shook out of it when dangled upside down. It fits tight as new. Just looks broke in. No cuts but a few dent and character marks on it.
If your still interested send me a P.M. with your e-mail or just e-mail me.

Peace.

This entire thread is hilarious to me! What the hell are the chances??

Anyway, sounds like everyone is happy in the end. :)

Hopefully it was a mouse PAD and not the actual mouse.

Personally I find mouse pads to be too soft - either you go light and get the edge you want but it takes forever, or you put some muscle into it and wind up with an obtuse edge.

Am I missing something here?
Mouse pad (I assume that he did use a pad, not a mouse...) + sandpaper = the best method to properly sharpen a convex edge.
