The carbon fiber that came on my Demko AD20.5 is amazing. It’s strong, thin, and the way the pattern changes in the light is gorgeous.
But, I love Micarta. I love its warmth, its texture and grip, and when it gets scratched and dinged up, I love its character.
I got my first two Demkos a week ago. I’ve been babying the carbon fiber AD20.5 while waiting on the Micarta scales to arrive, and choosing the G10 Shark Cub for tougher and dirtier tasks. I know carbon fiber is strong, but I always feel like I have to protect it and not scratch or chip it.
Well, the Micarta scales from Ripp’s Garage Tech showed up yesterday, and I love them! They’re a little thicker than the carbon fiber to where the three pins are now hidden. I didn’t mind seeing the pins, just an observation. And just thick enough that the stock pocket clip screws had to be swapped out for the two longer screws that came with the Lynch deep carry lefty clip. I always treat new Micarta with a coat of 3 in One oil.
Some of you may be asking why I bought carbon fiber in the first place if it’s not what I prefer. Well, the other option to get a clip point D2 blade was G10, and that’s not what I want either. In fact, if I can find a set of Micarta scales for the Cub, I’m in. I figured somebody would be more likely to take the carbon fiber scales off my hands and use and appreciate them than a set of G10 scales so they’re not sitting in a box of knife parts forever. They really are beautiful and deserve to be used by someone who likes carbon fiber. That just isn’t me. Did I mention that I love Micarta?
