Swapping Case XX Scales?

Is it possible to swap Case scales from knives of the same pattern? Or are they made custom to the individual knife. Thanks in advance!

In all likelihood, a set of scales/covers from one knife won't exactly fit another of identical pattern anyway; they are hand-fitted at the factory, as the bolsters/caps at either end of the handle also won't be exactly the same fit between knives; their size & positioning will create issues in fitting the covers. If you put two 'identical' knives side-by-side, you can often see differences in the size/thickness/length of the bolsters and/or caps, as well as differences in the angle at which the bolsters/caps meet the ends of the covers. These are all the things that would have to be accounted for, in fitting a new set of covers. And perhaps appropriately, these things are also the nuances of craftsmanship that make traditional knives 'traditional'. :)

That said, I'd think it would be difficult in most cases, to remove the covers without damaging them anyway. Pins would have to be extracted and replaced with new ones as well.

This should probably be over in the Maintenance & Tinkering forum but since you're not getting any replies, I'll say that even if the covers for various knives of the same pattern may be made on a jig or other type equipment, the holes drilled for the pins may not be exactly drilled from cover to cover. Therefore, it is most likely that if you try to take the covers from say a Case 3318 stockman and swap them out for the covers of another Case 3318 stockman they may not align. I'm not saying it can't be done but it will most likely be a bit difficult to do.

Let's see what the folks in Maintenance & Tinkering think.
