Swapping scales on a Manix

i have swapped scales before on my Manix and using string I haven’t had any problems getting them off my Manix 2. The problem I am having is getting new ones on. Any tips on installing the scales over the lanyard tube is appreciated.

Lots of info out there if you google “ lanyard tube re install spyderco”

The little flare on the tube is the problem.
I’ve had success with just a few passes around the tube with a fine file. Although you may get a little rattle afterward. I think you can re-flare the tube once it’s in there with a tapered punch to solve that problem.
I think you can buy aftermarket Ti lanyard tubes without the flare that’ll just drop in. Although I have no first hand experience with these.

Be careful! You can crack the g10 if you muscle it wrong. Try and wiggle them on just enough to start them and get them to bite inside the hole. Then you can try a small bar clamp [1]that will squeeze the scales evenly around the hole. The problem with using your hands, is that it is so hard to apply pressure evenly. Or you can make a homemade press with a couple washers, and a nut and a bolt[2]. Just be sure and use a fully threaded bolt that is narrow enough to fit through the lanyard hole without scraping.

And above all, work slowly and patiently. If you do it right, there won’t be any chips, cracks, or rattles concerning the lanyard hole. Keep us posted and can’t wait to see pics when you’re done!

The carbon fiber ones I received from you I guess had the same problem. I took some 1000 grit sandpaper to the lanyard hole. I rolled it up small and let it expand in the hole. Give it a couple twists and it try it till it fits. Mine fit really tight with no rattle.

It's important that the tube sits tight so no filing or sanding here. I assemble the Knife loosely and then try on a flat surface to push the scales together using my palm (the "ball of the thumb"?). If this doesn't work I use pliers buffered with a thickly folded cloth. This has worked on the dozen+ Manix 2 I have re-assembled.

For pressing small items such as pins I have found Knipex pliers wrenches to be as good and swift a method as any. Parallel jaw movement makes a nice little press with lots of leverage. Others make similar now, but my pliers of all sorts are mostly Knipex and I recommend them heartily.

I was thankful for the opinions found in this thread and while I haven’t many posts here (BF); I do on BCUSA - stated only to give a little cred to my solution to this quagmire -
I gently/gingerly/ever so carefully and accurately used a press w standard # 8 eyelet flare. Worked!;);););)
