Swapping scissor spring from one SAK to another

Are you able to remove the spring from the scissors of one Victorinox SAK and install it on another? Or does the process of taking it out screw up the spring?

The older models have single leaf spring. The newer models have a folded spring. The springs also come in 3 lengths. If you match the spring type, there shouldn't be a problem. You need a very small punch to remove the spring from the side and a small pair of pliers to squeeze it into the new scissors. You can buy the newer springs.

Thanks. I'd be harvesting one from a 91mm SAK that has a hook, and installing it in a 91mm model that doesn't have the hook. Doable?

should be. just go slow, its like popping out a roll pin, going to fast will bend things.

As long as the scissors look like they line up, you should be good to go. But getting new springs is pretty easy.

If the hook you are talking about is in the spring, it probably won't work. The scissor handles are closer together on the older models with the single leaf spring. The "double" spring will probably be too wide for the older model. Good luck on finding a "skinny" spring. The old springs are blued Carbon steel. The new springs are Stainless steel.

I just meant that the one knife has the hook "tool," and the other knife was made before they started putting those on there.

The spring compatability will be evident right away. A fat spring won't work in a skinny scissors. A skinny spring might work in a fat scissors if you bend it.

The replacement springs are relatively cheap, i'd rather buy some new ones than cannibalize old ones. They used to be available online in the usual auction and river named sites, haven't checked lately though.

I'm having a heck of a time finding a place to order everything I want to rehab this old Climber (spring, new plus scales, etc.) at a cost that -- when you include shipping to Europe -- makes sense. Guess I'll just order stuff to my mom's address in the US and she can bring it over when she comes to visit the grandkids. :-(

Mnblade,

Can you take or send your knife for repairs to an European Victorinox service center near your present location?
