Swapping sides on the belt clip.

Hi All,

I have a CQC-8 Banana (waved, black blade) and want the clip on the other side of the handle, so I can wave forwards into a reverse grip.

It looks easy enough to take the knife apart and drill 3 new holes in the G10 and the liner, then tap threads in the liner.

I could move the cilp as far to the end as possible too which I would prefer.

Maybe the clip would fit behind the lanyard hole?

Anyway, does anyone know what size tap I would need for the screw holes?

Thanks,

Steve

You need a 2/56 tap and 0.79 or 0.73 drill bit. I usually use a 0.79 after having
snapped a few taps :foot: but IIRC 0.73 is the recommended pilot hole size for 2/56.

Fantastic, thanks guys.

Reading STR's forum now, hopefully he can sell me a clip plus a drill bit and tap :)

STR sorted me out good, he's a great guy!

I've tapped a few small holes before and think I'll be fine, thanks for the advice. Will post a pic here when it's done :)

You might find better wave-to-use draws using the knife in reverse grip as shown in my video with the framelock super 7.

Agreed. I think the aspect many knife reviewers fail to recognize are the advantages of the wave feature. Their con is they don't have the wave solution on all carried knives so they use the thumb stud. During the same reviews, time and time again, they mess up opening and will say "that wasn't a very good opening".

The flaw in their logic is tactically flawed. The wave is a gross motor skill. Thumb studs are a fine motor skill. Even with practice, fine motor skills may fail in a life and death situation. That is unless you have been in life and death situations many times. It's the same fine motor skills which apply to many automatics. To exascerbate the experience, many autos have safety. I here to testify brothers that fine motor skills are minimal and "shot placement" is impossible. The solution is carry a wave deployment system or a fixed blade. Be safe.

Charlie Mike, It was you that got me interested in swapping sides with the clip on the CQC7 in the first place :) Saw the above vid posted here:

I love the wave, it's a perfect design in my opinion and I don't carry any other knives now, apart from a SOG flash if I need something tiny. The CQC7 snaps open every single time I draw it, if that's what I want, but it's also simple to draw it without opening.

After waving a few hundred times the lock has smoothed up nicely and it's no longer impossible to close!

Will post some pics I took of the lock progressing from new, and some mods I did later on.

Wow... shit gets around!

BTW, Welcome to BF

OK guys pics as promised :)

The finish was nice, like this all over:

But I sanded alll the edges smooth, and sanded the whole thing while I was at it.

Got the clip installed no worries, drilling and tapping was easy as expected, done it before on RC Heli's etc.

I love the clip, exactly what I wanted. Thanks STR! The knife sits flush with my jeans pocket and the lanyard makes for easy waving still. Took me a dozen goes to get a lanyard length and dimensions I was happy with in all situations. My last 2 fingers fit perfect in the gap between the twists and the knot.

Had to be careful with positioning the clip, got extremely close to one of the other screw holes coming through from the other side but it worked out great.

This knife has a hard life as it gets used all day long, mainly on packing straps/cardboard/rope/vegetation but isn't abused and is very well maintained and sharpened. I love it :)

I've gotten used to the chisel grind and am probably going to leave it like this after much consideration of giving it a v grind. I think the chisel holds up better under Hard Use and it's very easy to sharpen. Non symmetrical cutting hasn't been as much of a problem as I thought it might.

Not long after I got the knife I ground then sanded the G10 and liners a fair bit to give more relief around the thumb disc and especially the lock release to make it easier to get to. I also removed all the laser cut marks by sanding.

Later I sanded the jimping on the liner lock release a bit to make it less hard on my poor delicate fingers. I must love sandpaper. I waved and closed it over 1000 times the first week and it was extremely hard to unlock sometimes. It unlocks with consistent pressure now and locks up perfectly, halfway across.

I took pics when it was new after waving and counted the first few hundred openings:

Brand new, first hard wave:

Note the uneveness between G10 and liners from Emerson, promting me to get sanding.

40 hard waves:

By 100 hundred it was nearly half way, bby 200 it was bang on half way and has more or less stayed there.

I had to constantly adjust the pivot screw tighter, but wanted to leave it until the kinfe was really wel broken in before using some Sportsmans Goop under the head of the screw going to do that now. Thanks to whoever suggested it! (read it here).

And a pic of all parts when new, I took it apart because I'm curious and wanted to lube the pivot washers with graphite.

The longer I've used this knife the more impressed I am, it's a fantastic tool.

Thanks for reading!

Happy to hear you're happy :D

Wow, I love that clip and how deep it must sit in the pocket. I'd really like something like that on my Mini 7.
