I really like the swayback gent pattern by Case.Only problem is it's too small for me at 3 1/5".
Does anyone make the same pattern closer to 4"-4.25" & with a carbon steel blade? It must be a single wharncliff blade.

Will I have to go the custom route with this? Can a maker do this for $300-$400?

Thanks in advance for any help you could provide.

There's a bunch of makers, with info on them,in this sub forum, that can do it for yur price range
I'd go custom, just by the way you state what you know you want,so now you can get scales & steel the way you want, too

It seems that most custom slipjoint makers prefer to use stainless steel for their knives. But that's the beauty of going custom, you really can get it the way you want. If you want a carbon steel blade, it shouldn't be hard to find a maker to work with you. I'd start by communicating with a few of the makers whose work we are familiar with on this forum -- Bret Dowell, Kerry Hampton, and Rick Menefee. They all make the swayback pattern. Once you make contact it should be relatively easy to hash out the details and find out if you can get the knife you made with your budget.

Thanks for the replies Vince & Christian.Would I be correct in assuming there is not a production model of what I'm looking for?

Right off the top of my head I'd say in that size, you'd be hard pressed to find a reg warncliffe blade
There are alot of vintage jacks with swayback frames in that size, but the blades are not always reg warncliffe, and then, there is condition issues
Perhaps someone else knows of one There certainly is alot of slipjoints out there, almost every week,in here I see new stuff.
But since you know what you want,I think from a satisfaction point,I'd wait it out for a handmade. In the long run,it'll be better & easier

I don't really have the cash(right at this moment) for a custom. If anyone comes across what I'm looking for, please let me know.
I could go with stainless(as long as it's not 420 or lower),it's the size that's really important to me.
I'd like to buy American, but won't 'turn my nose up' to German or Japanese made.

Thanks again

Not a true swayback, although Queen/Schatt & Morgan call it a swayback, this is from Schatt & Morgan. It is 4 1/8" closed and is in their ATS File and Wire Series with an ATS 34 steel blade.

You can get em all day long for well under a C-note.

Modoc ED,That's gorgeous!Is there a half-stop?I don't care for half-stops.

I know what your saying, a 4" swayback would be the cats :p
I've been looking at the Case also, just about bit a few times.but I know it wouldn't satisfy the itch.

The sway back gent by Case is a lot more knife than you think it is. But if you're wanting something similar, but a litle bigger, take a look at the wharncliffe mini-trapper. Here's the antique second cut bone example (top knife in the photo):

It's also made currently in the stag rancher series - a beautiful knife (I must have one).

One other possibility is the Copperlock with wharncliffe blade - several versions have been made, you will have to keep your eye out for one though. Here is my cranberry bone version of that knife:

And we have some custom makers that can certainly make you a superior product along that line, just larger.

Amherst Cutlery used to put out Swaybacks with Wharncliffe but I think they were all in a stainless of some sort. Not sure this company is still in business but you might be able to pick up examples.

This is a Schatt & Morgan File & Wire Cotton Sampler, but it's very similar to what you're looking for.
It's 4-1/8" closed. I have seen one of these reground to a Wharncliffe blade.

Hey thanks for all the great suggestions everyone.

I think I'm going to go for the GEC model 72(thanks joe-bob),though that S&M is a real eye catcher.I like the way a nice patina develops on a carbon steel traditional knife.

Eventually I'll get one of the fine makers on this forum to make me a custom Swayback, but the GEC 72 should satisfy the itch for now.:o:)

Thanks again guys:thumbup:

i think the Chinese department is out of business. they made 99.9% of the knives and all the parts. .01% was made in the USA from Chinese parts.
