After reading Jackknife's story about the whittler, I stopped by a hobby shop and picked up a piece of bass wood to try my hand at whittling while I wait for some steel to arrive. I decided to do this with my Case Chestnut Swayback since my Chestnut stockman gets all of the pocket time. So far I am impressed with the sturdyness of this little guy. Before I fugured that I needed to cut along the grain to remove the wood it was handling the across the grain cutting just fine. The edge is holding very well also. I have two new blisters to show off at work tommorrow also. See what ya gone and done jackknife.:D

I was thinking of getting some basswood soon, and trying my hand at whittlin. I have so many knives, gotta do something with them. Make sure you post pics once done with that piece.

What Chris said. Please post pics when you're done.

Love the look of that wharncliffe blade. I'm thinking about getting either the swayback or one from the Trapper series with the wharncliffe blade.

Keep us updated with how the whittling is going.

Yes, or at least trying to make. It will be a long project, since there is not enough time these days. But I will post pics once I am a little further into it. The little sway back has almost finish carving out the end I started on and has no blade play whatsoever. I am impressed with the quality of it. Thanks.

I would love to see photos as you progress!

I only can wish I have the sort of time it takes to learn how to do a ball in the cage.

BTW: Hi Frank, the knife is performing great. Right now it is limited to light duty opening up the mail, boxes ect.

It really isn't that hard to learn. Here's one I did last week-end.

I've got to find someplace to buy basswood. Nobody sells it locally, so I've been using scrap lumber. And random sicks, of course.
