Turns out axes made for the Swedish military in the 1950's are hitting the market in U.S. I picked up an unused Hults Bruks for $20.00. 18" handle and 4.25" face. 7.25" front to back. Shape of head like GB Forest Axe. Profile of blade: 1/4" thick at center of blade 1" from edge; 7/16" thick at center 2" from edge; 1/2" thick at center 3" from edge; 1 1/16" thick at center 4" from edge (front of handle). All painted OD, of course. Head secured to handle with plastic like old Plumbs. My source says several models are moving trough surplus distribution channels at $20 - $35. Some are unused, others heavily used. Stamps tested another HB axe and found steel good but blade profile to thick on that one.

At a recent "gun, knife, and militaria show" here in Ohio, two different "surplus" dealers had them. Both told me that the axes were in the dustribution system - available from more than one wholesaler. Some of the axes they had were obviously used. I picked out one that had not even been sharpened - OD paint intact all the way to edge. I haven't tried to look for them via Internet since I have mine.

A search for axe at major surplus turns up no regular axes but two very cool Swedish "break out tools" One being a full size fireman's axe and the other hatchet sized version. May have to pick one up very neat.

Thanks guys. Yes the breakout axes look great. Good addition to the toolbox on the pickup.
