I have searched for a couple of days without success. I see that Fred Rowe uses a 33 degree angle. However curious to see what other makers opinions on their preferred angles. What angle works for tactical type blades? Also, does blade thickness have an effect on the angle utilized, seems like it might? Any magic formula or rule of thumb to go by? Also, I was wondering the preferred method prior or post HT.

It all depends on what you want. The thickness of the blade does make a difference in the angle, also the depth of the swedge and how far back on the blade you want it. I do not know of any magic formula, Just make it look good. You can grind it in either before of after HT. I normally do it before.

There is no magic angle; I think your right there, more a judgment call. I lay the blade on the belt and take a look down the point and turn the blade until it looks right and set the angle there.
Grinding a practice swedge on mild steel of the same thickness will give you a good reference. If you like the grind on the practice piece, mark the angle with a marker for reference next time.

The steeper the angle the sharper the edge. My fingers tell me that.

I have no idea what angle my swedges are, as I do everything free hand.

I just keep grinding until it looks right! ;)

I do everything free hand also, but I know what the angles are just in case I want to duplicate a specific grind. It makes life easier.:)
