Swedish Damasteel vs Alabama Damascus Steel

Hi Everybody,

New to the forum, but been lurking without an account for some time.

I would like to know people's thoughts on Swedish Damasteel in comparison to Alabama Damascus Steel.

I own a Kershaw Skyline in Damascus which I believe uses the Alabama Damascus Steel. Yesterday I purchased a Victorinox Pioneer X with a Damasteel blade.

From what I can gather via reading online is that the Damasteel used is comparable to CPM154, where as the Alabama Damascus is probably closer to VG10.

Excuse me if I've used the wrong terminology or if my information is confused.

So can anyone with more experience chime in on their thoughts?

Thanks!

The damasteel on the pioneer x is great, but it is on a SAK, so it doesn't have to do that much. The edge lasts longer than their normal stainless. I haven't used Alabama Damascus.

I think you'll probably notice more of a difference between your Skyline and Pioneer because the blades are different thicknesses with different grinds.

Thanks for the reply. Yes I doubt I personally would even be able to notice the difference between a cheap Chinese steel and S30v. But being into knives it's just something I like to know and think about. Thanks again.

What I did to take advantage of the harder steel on the SAK was to sharpen it more acutely. It's a real laser now, and the damasteel can handle it better than the regular stainless would.

I am pretty sure most Alabama Damascus is non-stainless (5160, 52100, and 15N20), whereas almost all Damasteel is stainless (RWL34 and PMC27). So that's a huge difference right there.

Also Alabama Damascus is forged traditionally, whereas Damasteel is a powder metallurgy steel.

I'd expect Damasteel to perform like CPM154 or a little better, and Alabama Damascus to perform a bit better than 5160 or 52100.

There's no contest. Swedish damasteel is a much more high performance and precision product.

Offcourse....the price reflects that.

That being said, Brad Vice runs Alabama Damascus, and he certainly knows what he is doing. I do prefer Damasteel, though, which does look slightly different to me, primarily because it's stainless and benefits from PM techniques.

I stopped using Alabama Damascus a year ago. I was having warping issues with 2/3 of everything I made.

Not saying Mr vice doesn't make a decent product. There's just a world of difference between the two.
