Sweeney's Snake repellent to keep the snakes away

Interesting! DId you try it out on da bears? Attract or repel? I'd take snakes over campsite bears any day!:)

The people nuts enough to buy that kind of stuff would have probably been more interested in whether it repelled pit vipers. Besides, I've got a feeling that most people reading Backpacker aren't likely to carry a 2lb. anything, anyway, unless it's one of the Big 3, and certainly not a bottle of liquid mothballs!

Great photos in there. I figure the best snake repellent is little kids running around and screaming, banging things with sticks and throwing rocks.

Don't confuse the readership of Backpacker Magazine with the Ultralight hiking crowd. True, there are a fair number of the "lightest is best" group among the readership, but the magazine is much broader based than that. To me at least, the subscription is worth the price just for the gear reviews (some from fine, experienced everyday hikers like Joe Flowers), trip reports, outdoor health and survival issues, equipment maintenance and general outdoor advice. A lot of cool photography there too of places I have never been and likely will never get to see in person.

I personally would never bother with a product like snake repellant, but for some people, a fear of snakes will keep them from enjoying the great outdoors. These folks would benefit from a placebo like sodium silicate if it made them feel safer.

Thanks again for the review.

Now... tick and chigger repellant. Can I just spray a fifty foot circle around my tent? :)

That's a good point. The problem I see a lot is fear of the outdoors in general keeping people from enjoying the outdoors. I guess snakes are part of it for some of them. I've got a bit of a phobia of both snakes and moving water(no idea why), myself. Don't let them keep me from doing anything, but guess I can understand the dilemna this presents people with.

btw, I love Backpacker magazine. It led me out West for the first time this spring, and I'm planning a couple of trips based on articles:thumbup:
Just meant that people humping all their gear are, by necessity, going to be weight-conscious when it comes to what they pack.

My August issue was in my mailbox this morning!

A sidebar mentions their cover of September 1999 featuring some barefooted guy with pigtails named "Cody Lundin", and touts a new Discovery program "Dual Survivor".

Their "Gear" page has an article on the Tops Shango and Fox 40 Sonic Blast whistle, AMK pocket survival pak Plus, and Montbell Breeze Dry-Tec sleeping bag cover.

Basecamp reviews Asolo, Keen, Lafuma, Lowa and Salmon Quest boots.

Skills talks about finding a lost partner, and walking out vs. staying put. Also, most common outdoor illnesses such as Acute Mountain Sickness, Heat exhaustion, Guiardia, Lyme, R.M. Spotted fever, etc.

Dang! Time to renew already! :p
