For the money, are there better natural-handle slipjoints out there than these!? I love the looks of 'em, but sadly am too committed right now to the folly of paying off some bills. Anyone know anything about these Buck Creek babies?

I've been eyeing them too. The scales look great and the price too! Looks like they would make a great user. Have not handled one or seen one in the flesh but am interested to see what the opinion is here.

Hi,

I have couple of large Stockman patterns made by Buck Creek, that I bought from S.M.K.W. a few years back. In my opinion they are just O.K.. The fit, and finish were pretty good.

The big problem was the spring tenison on the main blade while not lame, was pretty loose compared to other brands. They also needed a bit of edge work because of burring. The shield is also just glued in so expect to have to loctite it back in after a bit. The Celluloid. scales on the other have shrunk a bit also, but that's the risk with cell.:(:).

They're a good $35.00 knife, anymore than that, and I would look at a few other brands also(Eye Brand, Klass, Queen, etc....).

The Buck Creek mark has gone through a few changes, ownerships, etc.... through the years. The older models have a very good rep.

:D:).

I've found it pretty hard to find a non-Case stockman in the 3.5" range that's got bone, stag or wood handles, and rounded bolsters (those are a must for me, I hate square bolsters). Besides these Buck Creeks, do you guys know of any? I'd prefer carbon steel, but could live with quality stainless.

If you must have rounded bolsters, carbon steel, and natural handle materials, Boker makes a 4" stockman with rosewood handles and a 3.25" stockman with green bone handles; this one has more substantial blades than most 3.25" stockman knives I have seen. And if you are willing to "sacrifice" to go to D2 blades, Queen makes a very nice 4" stockman with round bolsters and cocobolo or bone handles.

mnblade, several German made brands fit your needs:
e.g. Hen & Rooster:

go to brand names and Hen & Rooster.
You have 3 1/2 " round bolster medium stockmans with deer stag handles or several models with different pick bone scales.
Also take a search for Shapleigh or for stockman pattern.
Shapleigh has some nice round bolster cattle knives 3 1/2" closed with carbon steel blades.
Queen has a 3 5/8" stockman in its Robeson series QN-2728 (though it is stainless):

Oh yeah, I hate knives with writing all over the blades. That rules out most Bokers. Thanks, though, lambertiana.

And littleknife, thanks for the tips.

You are welcome, mnblade.
I still think you should consider some square bolster models too. They are not all the same, some are nicely rounded at the very corners, so they will not cause much harm to the pocket.
E.g. my large (4 1/4 ") Eye brand stockman is of this type, it is even slightly rounded at the corners of the tang section of the blades. I own several stockmans of different brands and this is the only one which has this nice feature. This is not so striking visually but you definitely appreciate it when you hold the closed knife in your hand. I think actually you will have more pocket weare and tear due to the sharp pointy corners of the blade tangs than the bolsters.

BULLDOG Brand knives are well priced and many of their models come with Sambar Stag handles and Round bolsters. All of their knives have Carbon Steel blades. Very traditional patterns. Check out Ebay as there are usally plenty for sale there.
