This is a design Pennanngalan sent to me. It`s10 1/2" overall, with a 6" blade, and maroon linen micarta handles with brass pins. It reminds me a lot of the old Buffalo Skinner knives.

I started humming the old CCR song Green River as soon as I Saw that pic! That is some unusual handle shaping....someone tell us more about that...very cool!

Chris wanted it octagon shaped, so that's what I did. This one also has one of my sheaths. I didn't want to make a special pattern for Bob, so I did it myself.

Wonderful design and excellent execution. That should make short work of any skinning/butchering chores Pennanngalan has to do.

The octagonal handle shape is roughly based on the dog bone bowie pattern without the swells at the rear of the handle. I just always liked the looks of them so I went with it.

It looks great John, I can't wait till it arrives!

If you fellas think it looks good now, imagine how good it will look when it darkens to match it's brother.

I am curious how the handle will feel in the hand, with the octagonal do you believe there would be any hot spots? Just curious. Very nice old style skinner style.

I like it! Great work on that handle, John - it came out nice -

Very nice design, Penn!

I don't anticipate any hot spots, no. I have used hammers and hatchets, as well as a WW2 Swedish entrenching shovel, all with octagonal handles and I prefer them to the rounded ones. Seems like my hand has better purchase on the handle when in use.

Glad you like it fellas. I wish I lived closer to the get together spot so I could bring it and let everybody try it out.

I inherited some butcher knives from my grandfather with that shape handle. It's a different feel but gives you a solid hold.

Looks a lot like a Sheep Skinner pattern, which some people believe was the basis of the Nesmuk knife. Very nice design!!

Any maker's marks or stamps? I would like to take a look at them if they pop up on Google.

I think that handle shape is so cool, I have never seen it before but it looks great!

That is why I took a chance in the handle shape, I thought they was cool myself :D

The Sheep Skinner was definitely the biggest design influence on the blade. I wanted the edge to drop down below the handle a little so it would be easier to work with when it sees kitchen time though.

Dig it. Nice design, Pennanngallan. Really a one of a kind blade.

Nice job on this one, John. I don't think I've ever seen a custom maker do this kind of contouring before.

I hope you kept the design. It will be my next order.

This arrived today :D

Damn man, you did a fine, fine job on this!

For those wanting to know, the handle has passed the initial "grip test" where you grab it and squeeze hard and hold for awhile. The corners did not dig into my hand and it felt as good as I had hoped it would. The next thing I do is flip the knife around in the various grips that I actually use with a knife and squeeze hard in each position. Good on all counts. I will keep testing it over the coming weeks but my initial impression is this: I'm glad I took a chance, I'm really digging it!

Weight distribution: Balance point is right around the first pin. This makes the blade feel lively in the hand, which is what I like in a non-chopper.

Blade: John put a nice flat grind on this blade, it is nice and thin right behind the edge and slices/trims meat like a dream! So well, in fact, that based only on the first use, my bulldog has panicked and sworn a blood-oath against John over the paltry meat-trimmings she was given while I was preparing dinner for my family. She intends to take him out at the shins if she ever has a chance so I will not be bringing her to a gathering if I ever get to attend one. This change of attitude is rather alarming since she is usually sweet as hell and loves meeting people.

Thanks for making my ideas into reality John! I'll get some in-hand and in-use pics up as I can convince my wife to take them.

Thanks, really glad you are pleased with it, I enjoyed making it for you. Looking forward to seeing more pictures.
