This knife was make for the KITH 2010 (Knife In The Hat) I am excited to be a part of it this year.

I had hammered this one out in the Summer at a reenactment demo and was waiting for inspiration to finish it... the KITH couldn't have come at a better time. You gotta love the 18th Century propane forge.

I always start with sketches. If I can draw it, I can make it. This was going to be what I call a "fullsized necker" almost big enough to be a belt knife but small and light enough to make a comfortable necker.

My only other progress pic... sorry...

The finished product...

Swept Tribal Necker5160 Mat'l
10 1/2" overall
5 1/2" blade
5" handle (4 1/4" scale/wrap length)
5/32" spine at thickest
Handle is distressed oak, rawhide wrap (epoxy sealed), copper pins, carved accent bands, finished with danish oil.

The knife was entirely made using handtools only.

This may bug the heck out of some makers. I like finding different grain patterns for each side of the handle... symmetry in shape but variety in pattern makes it interesting, IMO...

There are no plungelines... the bevels run the length of the blade and into the tang so the tang itself is wedge shaped...

Close-up of pin and scrolling. I first saw this scrolling on a Cohea knife and loved the look. Thanks, John...

You'll have to wait for sheath pics...

Thanks for lookin' and thanks to Stacy E. Apelt (bladsmth) for organizing the KITH.

Glad you posted this here Rick because I didn't want to clutter up the KITH picture thread...

DYNAMITE knife! I really like the way your very personal style is evolving. While it's
not my absolute favorite of your pieces (that would be the double edged tribal that
you hated to part from) I would be very, very happy to be the lucky maker to get it
for Christmas :)

Amazing. Rick that is some incredible work. The handle is absolutely perfect!

Geez I like this. You have such a cool recognizable style and this is such a great example.
Your sense of continuity of theme is so very accomplished in this one. It's visually appealing from tip to tail.
Love the scrolling at the butt. Gonna have to try that sometime.

I agree with everyone else - that is a really stylin' knife. amazing what you can do with the "old fashioned" propane forge.

seriously - cool style. Not only a well made knife, but one that does a good job at capturing its intended artistic idiom.
