This knife was make for the KITH 2010 (Knife In The Hat) I am excited to be a part of it this year.
I had hammered this one out in the Summer at a reenactment demo and was waiting for inspiration to finish it... the KITH couldn't have come at a better time. You gotta love the 18th Century propane forge.
I always start with sketches. If I can draw it, I can make it. This was going to be what I call a "fullsized necker" almost big enough to be a belt knife but small and light enough to make a comfortable necker.
My only other progress pic... sorry...
The finished product...
Swept Tribal Necker5160 Mat'l
10 1/2" overall
5 1/2" blade
5" handle (4 1/4" scale/wrap length)
5/32" spine at thickest
Handle is distressed oak, rawhide wrap (epoxy sealed), copper pins, carved accent bands, finished with danish oil.
The knife was entirely made using handtools only.
This may bug the heck out of some makers. I like finding different grain patterns for each side of the handle... symmetry in shape but variety in pattern makes it interesting, IMO...
There are no plungelines... the bevels run the length of the blade and into the tang so the tang itself is wedge shaped...
Close-up of pin and scrolling. I first saw this scrolling on a Cohea knife and loved the look. Thanks, John...
You'll have to wait for sheath pics...
Thanks for lookin' and thanks to Stacy E. Apelt (bladsmth) for organizing the KITH.
