Swimsuit knife

For those nice summer days at the lake-front cottage when I wear my swimsuit all day, I carry the Spyderco Dragonfly LW. Small, weighs nearly nothing, super sharp AUS-8 blade resists rust, and cheap enough not to worry about loss. This is one of those situations where AUS-8 really shines. Lots of people dont like it, but in a small knife I think that it works really well.

My swimsuit knife is the Lightweight Cricket with the ATS-55 blade, and a very secure steel pocket clip.

In my experience, GIN-1 (G-2), and AUS-8 make the best "pool knives," but I'm talking chlorine here. ATS-55 didn't seem to do well in pools, but may be fine for lakes, etc. I don't know about salt water, though.

After you finish swimming, rinsing your knife with plenty of tap water will help a lot.

My main pool blades are my old Enduras. FRN is great for water--I can't imagine taking G10, micarta, or other fancier knife materials into a pool.

Happy swimming!

Anyone read Mack Bolan books (Executioner Series)? Can't remember which book but in one, Mack Bolan carries a Military in his swim trunks and performs heroic deeds.

I carry an old style Delica IWB in my trunks. I would think the dragonfly would do well also, as it has the pastic clip too.

Thank God I'm not crazy!!!

I thought I was the only person that wore a knife when swimming.

Recently on a trip we were headed down to the hotel pool at 9:30pm, so I slipped a stainless bladed knife into my trunks pocket, and my family thought I had lost it completely.

Hey Hotel pools tend to be notorious for roudy stupid drunks, so I go prepared.

I didnt think so many others carried a knife in their swimsuit!
I use my knife for utility only, as there is no real threat up at the cottage. Its good to have with you when you are in and out of the water all day and you often find yourself needing to cut things.

Mine is exactly opposite, SD only/legal to take most everywhere. As a pool manager one of the perks of the crappily paid job is I get to use the pool and hot tub after operating hours. We have had problems with pool hoppers in the past when no one was there. Chances of someone pool hoping with all the lights on and THEN proceeding to attack me is pretty remote. But, for the couple ounces it takes to clip my Delica into my waist band it is worth it.

Edited to add: I went with a delica rather than the larger endura because it is specifically a swimsuit knife and there are a couple reasons. First it is less intrusive to wear IWB than an Endura since it is against skin. Second, all-over legality is nice so I can take it on a rode trip to wear when using aforementioned motel pools.

I just saw this news story and think that it makes an appropriate followup to this thread:

I feel sick and sad that this kind of stuff happens so much. I wish the victim had been carrying a knife or impact tool or something else that she was trained to use. I don't know if Kansas is a shall-issue CCW state, but I guess that wouldn't have helped, since she was a life guard. Anyway, if you live in that area, take a look at the suspect sketches at

Stay safe everyone!

Why I carry a knife, among other things, when I am at work, especially after hours. FYI, Kansas is not any sort of CCW state.

That just reinforces my idea of carrying a knife.

Ad me to the "Hey! there are other people that carry a knife when they are swimming" camp. Ever since I got it, my pool/ocean/lake knife has been an old all stainless Harpy with the Gin-1 blade. A quick rinse with scalding hot tap water and a drop of oil and its never had a problem...getting the sand out is often the biggest problem but the design of the Harpy with the side cut outs is perfect. My biggest fear is me or one of the kids getting tangled up in something around water, thats why I started to carry it...could it hold its own with a two legged problem? No doubt in my mind.
