I was playing with a friends case cheetah today and decided that i need to get a knife with a swing guard. I really like the case's design and handle options but the "surgical steel" is keeping me from buying one. Especially when queen makes knives like this http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=QN1LCO with D2 steel for the same price if not cheaper.

I am wondering if there are any other swing guards i should check out for around 50 bucks, as well as if the D2 is as much better as i think it is.

thanks

In a manual there's the Puma Medici. NB current production is Spanish made not Solingen.

In Autos there's the Hubertus Guardian for a bit $more (quality control seems to have gone down the toilet on these recently). Or any of the various Italian Stilettos made by Frank Beltrtame. Or Dalton made a swinguard model fairly recently. Lots of choice in autos.

Queen makes some nice ones in D2 for around that price. Check Cumberland Knives.

You also might find some Schatt&Morgans (by Queen) in ATS-34.

I've been eyeballing some swing guard models by Cuchilleria Esparcia for a while. Somewhat of different style, but looks pretty neat. I like how the guard only extends downwards.

I have a vague memory of seeing similar/the same models sold under a different Spanish brand, but don't quote me on that.

I've got a Cheetah and was faily impressed with it for the $30 I paid on closeout from Gander Mountain. Sure it's surgical steel but not bad for the money, any more and I would have passed on it.

For the money, in current production I would go with the Queen.

I also recently aquired an older Kabar/UCC swing guard that I really like. You can spot older SG's on eBay on a fairly regular basis.
