I was hiking down a woodland trail and came across a very large Maple tree that had naturally fallen over. This tree was huge. It wasnt blocking the trail or anything. As it lay flat on the ground , someone had taken an axe and chopped it in half. Only thing I can figure is someone wanted the exercise .

A couple years ago, in order to rehabilitate an injured shoulder, I used a couple larger hawks as physical therapy weights as I did my daily one hour walk through the woods. With one in each hand, I performed various range of motion exercises while gripping them at the end of the handle. This actually helped.

I also would stop and briefly hack away at fallen trees blocking the trail. I didn't leave the trail looking for extra exercise. I did learn that chopping large diameter logs with a tomahawk is alot more exercise than I want. Unless it absolutely has to be chopped right now, I'm going to go get an axe or chainsaw.

I chop wood with an axe for exercise. Unless it has to be removed right now (like a tree fallen across my driveway/fence/house, in which case the chainsaw comes out), I take advantage of the exercise.

Also things like tilling/weeding a garden by hand, pushing a lawnmower instead of riding a tractor. All kinds of outdoor work makes good exercise. Plus it saves money -- the tools are much cheaper and you don't need a gym membership.

I may have to try chopping a felled tree in half. Theres several axes at a local thrift store. A couple of double bitted ones. Ill have to see if any look up to the task.

I certainly agree with Cpl P. on this one. That's why most folks say that "Firewood Heats Twice" - once when you cut and haul it and once when you burn it.

Dip - if you do get the Dbl Bit do be careful, more folks are injured with these than any other Axe (besides a dull one that is).

i stored my lawn tractor and now push my one acre instead of ride it  also when i was younger i did excersize by splitting wood which included collecting, you would be suprized.

George Foreman does!!!
Q: You talk about making a boxing comeback. What would be a typical workout for you?
A: I'll start in the morning about six, and I'm done at nine at night. I like to get up before daybreak and get my roadwork done. Then I rest, have a little breakfast, then go back out and chop wood and dig holes. Then there's the weightlifting.
