Have been looking into various alcohol stoves and have built the Pepsi can stove and the Don Johnson Photon stove. I just received a new Swiss Army alcohol stove (similar to the GI canteen cup setup).
It came with the brass stove, fuel bottle, lower stove unit and a "pot" and pan and no instructions. The stove has a cap with an O-ring seal. Is this for keeping unused fuel for the next burn? Anyone have any experience with this stove? How much fuel can I add? Burn time to be expected with 2 oz? Any tips/recommendations using this thing would be appreciated.

About the best advice I can give is cook with it at home untill you're good with it. I used to camp with a bunsen burner I stole from my dad's lab, and just kept it topped off whenever I was done cooking. My philosophy was not to let things run out. Now, I'm a little wizer, and don't have one to experiment with.

I have swedish stove (marked with three crowns), so yours may be different. The o-ring is indeed to keep left over fuel in. Don't put the lid on til the stove is completely cool, or you'll damage the seal. When I half-fill mine, I can boil a pot of water and still have a bit of fuel left over, as I recall. There are some more detailed burn times for various alcohol stoves on Thruhiker.com. Do a search for alcohol stoves, you'll find days worth of reading. Enjoy, these are neat little stoves.

This is a Trangia stove, or one made off of their design. Yes, you can store fuel in there, it will boil a liter of water on one filling, albeit taking about 11-15 minutes. It is silent, reliable, but prone to suffer in the wind. Most of the cook kits have what looks like a pot drilled with holes, and a big hole in it for the burner to rest in, then a bucket wind screen the pot rests in. Well here, take a look...A good site:

I love these little things, but am leary in windy, cold weather. They are OK for weight, but not great. The way trimmed down versions work well for heating water. Best of all, it is the most simple, user friendly stove you can find.
