I've never owned a Swiss Army knife with metal covers, and was curious if any of you prefer them over the usual plastic ones and why so. Thanks!

I like them. Slimmer and classier looking. Though I don't dislike the red plastic ones.

Greatly prefer the Alox Swiss Army Knives. Only thing I miss is no tweezers. As mentioned they are slimmer. They are also seem more robust and solid in-hand.

I'll echo what jc said, they're a bit classier for edc. Since they are slimmer than some of the red ones that have more tools they are easier on the pocket as well. For woods carry, I'll take a red one with more options but the alox is good for normal days.

I love Alox...the plastic feels cheap to me. It also scratches easily. I wish I could get all of my SAKs in Alox.

Alox SAKs are awesome! They definitely seem to have a stronger, crisper snap than their cellidor cousins. Also, on the full sized models such as the 93mm Pioneer series, the blades are thicker than comparable red versions, such as a 91mm Camper, etc. Still awesome slicers, but just more substantial.

I prefer them. They feel better, wear better, look better, slimmer and are more durable. The only downside is the loss of the handle tools like the toothpick and tweezers. Once they figure out how to add those, I'll buy one. It's actually what I have in my pocket tonight! Black Farmer:

As a guy that totes a Plastic handled Recruit nearly every day, I've gotta say the Alox is a necessity, for traditional knife collection. My Alox Cadet, is a grand knife, but I don't know were it's at, at them moment, plastic is more than serviceable, but you can't beat the aesthetics of an Alox handle, I'm jonesing, over a Farmer. I'm a hypocrite, carrying plastic and touting Alox, but an Alox SAK is much cooler IMHO than what I carry.

alox is pretty, but costs more and more importantly weighs more -- which makes a difference when hiking.
OTOH, I don't know of a plastic handled model with the in-line awl.

Seriously? A fraction of an ounce makes a difference on a hike? I doubt it.

The awl/punch on the ALOX models is far superior to the one on the plastic handled ones. The main blade is more robust too, but still a great slicer. The blades/tools have better snap and walk and talk.

That said, I carry my Cybertool 29 far more often than my Pioneer Rancher. If they made an ALOX Cybertool, I'd buy one in an instant, although I'd lament the loss of the tweezers and pen (but not the toothlick).

I love the look and feel of the alox..... but always carry a Vic classic as my keychain so I have a set of tweazers and a pick.

The reason I like the alox is pretty much what everyone else has said.

I think the alox feels better as a knife and comes in cool colors.... if you can give up those dang tweezers and pick!

I keep a classic on my keyring and the tweezers find the most use.

The Alox blades are thicker than the plastic handled ones. I read somewhere that they were 1/3 thicker. Maybe that isn't the right number but they are thicker.

They are a completely different knife to the plastic handle ones. I had a Alox Pioneer as my only edc for 18 months and I rearly felt like I needed a bigger or stronger knife for day to day stuff. Stout main blade and awesome awl. Very good size and quality. You should check one out, depending on your needs I would recommend a Farmer or Pioneer as a good starting point.

Alas and alack, I cannot give them up. I have looked at Alox covered knives dozens of times with my mouse hovering over the BUY button. But then I see the solid ends with no toothpick and no tweezers. And my mouse moves away. Tweezers are a nice-to-have. Toothpick is a gotta-have.

Which is why you keep a classic on your keyring. ;)

Same here, gotta have the tweezers & toothpick as they are very useful & like you, that has prevented my getting an alox handled SAK.(or plastic handled SAK that lacks them).
Well,that & I don't care for the way anodized aluminum wears.

I've been wanting to try out this handle material on a SAK for a while now. Will have to pull the trigger soon once I can settle on a pattern I want.
