what is it about swiss army knives that makes them feel like they are unbreakable? i mean ive been tootin my SAK super tinker for a good 2 months now and it seems like i could tie the dang thing to a stick and use it as a club and it wouldnt break. sorry for the ramble but this tool is just so incredibly built and they are not even expensive...i see why people collect SAK's.

I've been carrying a Tinker in my pocket or Deluxe Tinker in a belt pouch when I go out for several years. You are right SAKs are great; nearly indestructible and addicting. I'm not a "true" SAK collector, but I've amassed about 50 of them in various styles, tools, etc. Wish they would make an Alox Tinker (and Alox Deluxe Tinker) - now those would be indestructible.

This custom one comes very close to your desires, doesn't it? :)

They are well-made, but not indestructible. In particular, the plastic scales can come off under rough handling. But you can epoxy them back on or get an alox version of the knife (if it exists).

I carried a scale-less Vic Classic for a couple years — toothpick and tweezers, of course, no longer went with it. The scales came off after a trip through the washer and dryer.

I have a Lite that has been doing keyring duty for a while now. It has taken several falls. Still going strong

well earlier today someone actually STOLE my swiss army knife... it had a special lanyard made by vets that i got from donating to them and volunteering...

If you think the Super Tinker feels indestructible you need to get a alox model, preferably a Pioneer to start. Those feel like a tank, are a bit larger, and normally have more snap to the tools.

the only thing that kills the scales seems to be insect repellent - It actually turns them to jelly@ - Otherwise - I have an old 84mm tinker that is about 30 years old - and has been all over the country and out with me@ A real tank however would be the "soldier" model - alox and very tough - I think a collection consists of more than 3 knives!

Life long carrier of Victorinox knives, had one in my pocket since I was a kid. I am definitely a fan.

However, they are far from unbreakable. I have broken two, both Tinkers. Nothing against the Tinker, its just the one I have carried the most over the years. Both times I literally twisted them apart. Once using the flat driver and the other using the back philips driver. Both times I knew I was applying too much torque to the tool, but I was in a pinch and needed that screw loose. One time I was stranded with a corroded and stuck tight battery cable screw.

Victorinox knives come in handy in a pinch. The blades will slice as good as any knife. The tools however are not a replacement for dedicated drivers.

i was thinking about picking up a leatherman (probably the squirt ps4) just to have a belt multi tool. I am still going to carry my swiss army knife though! i wouldnt even think about leaving my house without it

i snapped a sak blade in half once... which is why i carry my normal knife and a sak not just a sak

I learned about this when I had 100% DEET (yep, you can get it if you know where to look) on my hands one summer in Alaska. Reached for my SAK, came away with red slime on my hands. The "T" in DEET stands for "toluene," which is a helluva solvent!

But to the OP's point, SAKs rock. I love mine. It's not in my pocket at the moment, but they don't get as much work from me in the winter because they don't do as well with gloved hands and I'm outside most of the day. But it's warming up this week, so I might dig it out (yeah, not counting the Classics scattered all over the place, I only have one working SAK at the moment:().

Only seen that done in very cold weather, and the user was prying at a knot in some wood. But then again, a knife can break, even under normal use.

First, shame on you for not having a tool kit in your car. Second, while I have several older SAKs the oldest one that I bought new is just over 20 years old and is an ECO Tinker. The nylon scales wear like iron and the tools have held up well.

The Tinker is my favorite, I find I use the small blade often, much more than the awl on the pioneer or the Farmer, and I wasn't in my car at the time. My car always has a tool kit in it.
