Went to a local store that has a few Victorinox SAK in stock, so I picked up these two. One being a Spartan Red, the other a Super Tinker. Was aiming for maybe a silver handled Alox version, but nothing there of that sort. I don't know if the red plastic handles are going to clash in the knife display that I've been working to fill.. but, the diversity does continue :-)

Super Tinker is in my top 4 of most useful Victorinox's, nice first choice!

Thanks! :-)
I have owned and given a bunch of SAK's out to friends and family in the past. A few were almost ridiculous in how many tools they had, but the receiver of these gifts always found them high on the coolness factor. It's been years since I owned any, though a few months ago I gave one to a fellow wine drinking friend of mine, my giving her the red spartan for having a cork screw (a wine bottle with a cork and one not having a cork screw, is always a bummer) :-)
This is the first time my purchasing a SAK as a collectible. They are traditional, though they have indeed been making them with the most advanced knife making machinery around for quite a while now. Oh well, still a neat and well made knife that needed representation in my collection :-)

Ah... question to you good folks.... the swiss army cross shield seems to actually be metal inlaid... is it? Or, are they just some silver finish? Never paid much attention to the little details before... but now with my collecting them... well, you know! ;-)

Silver finish....

It's good you bought it as a collectible and not for use.

Because once you start carrying a Victorinox, you start to question the point in carrying a single blade knife.
I use the screwdriver and scissors more then the blade..

I have carried SAKs in the past... always nice. But, I also gotta admit, I later purchased a Leatherman Micra... and though not having as many tools, I carried it exclusively for about a year, it having such a robust and easy to use pair of sissors. It too got given away to someone that found it neat :-)

Good luck! Collecting SAKs can become very addicting. I've recently been bitten by the SAK bug myself. I have switch my main focus on knives from traditional pocket folders to swiss army knives. As users they are great, and as collectibles, the choices are endless. From the early vintage models to the modern limited edition Alox runs, Saks can be highly collectable. I believe Victorinox is now catching on to the current collector knife markets, and I predict/hope they will be releasing more limited edition runs more often in the near future. The great thing about collecting SAKs is that they can be much more affordable to collect than a lot of other brands. Although generally priced competitively, you can still pay a hefty amount for collectible SAKs such as with the Scientist, the limited Alox editions, and the older vintage hard to find models. My favorite SAKs are the Alox Pioneer/Soldier, the Alox Cadet, and the Explorer. I also really like the Climber, and the Spartan.

got a tinker, very useful item. rides in the console of my work vehicle. guess i use the screwdrivers and the awl more than the blades but thats because i have a knife in my pocket, too.

A Victorinox SAK is an apt display collectable especially one that shows useful knives made over the years.

Thanks for the answer :-) I gotta say, it sure looks like a perfectly inlaid metal shield.... But, modern tech can be something else ;-)

it is inlaid metal, only the budget like of nylon scaled SAKs has a painted on cross. You can see the metal shield when you take the scales off.

Thanks... I thought I was going crazy, because I kept on looking at them and they looked so much like inlaid shields. The perfection in their execution is evident. There is a certain country that makes copies of everything else made around the world. Sometimes these copies are really good... but I have never seen anyone come close to making a SAK copy that can hold a candle to the Swiss made knives.

This is the issue I recently discovered when I picked up my first SAK about 3 weeks ago or so! I find myself carrying it about half the time now. I used to rarely use the same knife 2 times in a one week stretch but that is changing because of this SAK. I grab it every morning but then sometimes feel bad or feel like carrying something with bone or wood and reluctantly put the SAK back on the shelf and grab something else. :)

I'm sure it probably has been discussed before... but has/does Victorinox make their SAK with bone handle scales. Seems like that would add a little warmth to an already awesome production knife :-)

I haven't seen bone scales, but I'm sure it's been done if not as a limited release then as a custom modification. There are definitely buffalo handled SwissChamps, and there are older models with stag handles, but I think it's fake stag.

It sure would be something to have a line of SAKs with jigged bone, and though it would not be their biggest sellers because the cost would be higher, I'm sure they'd have a decent following :-)
While at that store today that I purchased the other two red colored scale SAKs at, I decided to pick up this little black SAK Classic. I'll get an Alox in silver someday, and that should be fine with my SAK representation. I gotta get back to the bone, wood, and horn scaled knives, lol! :-)
