Hey, what do you guys think of the new Swiss Army Standard Issue Soldier Knife? I think it's pretty good. Link: http://www.knife-depot.com/knife-199985.html The knife is new for 2009 and distributed amongst the soldiers in the Swiss Army.

Will I be able to import this in to Canada? It seems the knife laws at the border are very strict at the moment. I don't want my knife to be confiscated.

Pretty nice. It's a bit large for myself. Personally, I like the older alox soldier. Fits well in the pocket. You should be able to buy it directly in Canada.

Welcome to bladeforums!

Being that you're new, I won't make assumptions about what you may or may no know. So...

The new knife of the Swiss Army is almost identical to Victorinox's One Hand Trekker. The OHT has a big fan base around here. It also has the tweezers and toothpick that the new knife does not. The OHT is also significantly less expensive. All this said, the OHT is NOT the knife of the Swiss Army.

It was my understanding that the blades on the old Soldier model were somewhat thicker than those on the other similar models. Is there is difference in blade thickness between that of the OHT and that of the new Soldier?

I bought the new Soldier about a month ago and I like it. It has a nice grip and useful tools, but not too much. It is not my choice for EDC, because of its dimensions, but it is a good tool to carry during hiking and camping.

About the blade dimensions. As far as I can see, the blade is of the same thickness and length as my other 111mm models, a Nomad and Centurion (Dutch army model).

I'm a big fan of mine!

I like the One-Hand Trekker/Soldier Knife a lot. Its true the SK is lacking the tweezers and toothpick of the OHT, but to tell the truth I almost never use either. The only real grip I have with the new Soldier Knife is that it has the same scalloped blade as the original OHT, which so many people complained about that they released an un-scalloped version.

Truthfully, I am tempted to pick up a Soldier Knife and just try to grind the blade down to a plain edge. ;)

If you do, a Lansky system works very well for removing serrations like that, with a nice, regular edge. Remember that the non-serrated portion of the new Soldier knife is a chisel grind (I think).

I have the new Soldier knife and i love it.
With what stone would you remove the serrations with?

In the Lansky system, I'd start with the extra coarse and work all the way down to the extra fine, do 'em all. It doesn't take long.
