Well after 30 years (27 since broken) i finally sent my beloved Swiss Champ to Victorinox to have the broken wood saw blade replaced. Was told to leave a note as i want the original scales to be retained and the broken magnifying glass frame to not be replaced as it still functions just fine and i still want the knife to stay original scratches and all.
So hope they comply as i just read that Vic has cheapened their scales as of late.
To repace the saw i think they only have to remove one scale right?
Guess we will see.

View attachment 1082867 I think you have to remove both scales to get the pin out. New plastic scales give a little when they snap on to the collars that are located at the ends of each pin. Aluminum scales don’t give, so they must be glued on. Removing old scales compromises the plastic lip that snaps on to the lip of the brass collar. If you ask to have the old scales returned, you can probably glue them on (like an Aluminum scale).
I don’t think the repair station monkeys with gluing plastic scales. In the picture, you can see the mushroomed collar that the plastic is supposed to snap on. This knife had a wooden handle, so it had to be glued. You can also see how the plastic lip is deformed when the slab is pried off.

That's what i was afraid of. So if i read that correct, they will remove both and then new scales because new will snap into place as designed? Since they won't glue them back on? Well if they do put new scales on i told them that was ok but that i wanted the old ones back hopefully in one piece! Lol

It's too late now, but for others reading, for future reference, it might be best to send the knife in and KEEP the old scales yourself. If they replace the scales, you can always pop them off and glue your old ones back on.

I don't see why they wouldn't comply with your wishes though.

Did you send it someplace in the US, or back to The Fatherland?

Yes im sure im not the first SAK owner they have had to deal with that has a sentimental attachment to his beloved knife.

I know this is an old thread but felt it needed an update. Knife came back perfect. They did replace the scales but sent my old ones back with the knife. Missing spring was replaced and i had removed the Tweezers, tooth pick and pen so they would need to worry about them intending to put them back when i got it back. Well it came back with all new small parts. So glad i did this and thank you Victorinox! Well done. The knife was retired. I use their Champion Plus. (The Swiss Champion minus the pliers making it one row less)
Bought 3 of them when they were heavily reduced. Wife made me give one up for one of her employees birthday (never gonna do that again) and still have one new in box.
Hope this update gives this thread proper closure.

Thanks for the update, did the new scales feel of lower quality? I figured they would replace you pliers spring and small parts.
