I picked these up in the military surplus section at Mills Fleet Farm for $20 each.

Hatchet specs: Head is 5.5" x 3.25"; OAL is 15.5"; WT. approx. 2 Lbs 4 oz.

They should make a great sounding and camp hatchet.

I also picked up a Swedish surplus backpack there. It is dated 1942 with the Swedish crown stamp. This one looks like it is unissued. In great condition...leather is supple, no mold or dry rot. Canvas is like new.

Thanks for looking, Tom

I bought one that looks exactly like that from cheaper than dirt before I stopped supporting them.

That backpack looks to be in excellent condition. Do you find the frame on it to be a bit on the small side?

For the date of 1942 it is in excellent condition...really like new. I'm not a big guy , so when I tried it on (w/o a jacket) it seemed OK. But I haven't packed it yet and taken it for an outing. Or tried it on with a heavier jacket. The leather used on this pack is in excellent condition. Some of it is so thick it is hard to buckle up with the fittings on it. I'm sure it will break in with some use once I get it adjusted for me.

It was another lucky find for me at $20 and no shipping charges. I've seen them on surplus web sites in used condition for 3 times the price I paid for this one.

Do you have one? I would like your thoughts on it if you do.

My regards, Tom

Well, I dont have one now but a pack like that one is what I grew up with, I got it from my father who was issued it in the army. I used it on all my woods adventures from like 12 untill I was 17 when we moved and it got thrown away with all the junk from our house. I really miss it and have been thinking of getting a new one but I remember the thin shoulder straps and the frame had begun to fit too tight, and Im bigger now so that might be a problem. For more indepth info on the swedish army packs I would recomend Sealegs fantastic swedish surplus thread on BushcraftUSA.

Edit to add: The backpack is commonly known as Älg Pungen, the mooses scrotum. Just thought you should know :)

King, I found Sealegs fantastic swedish surplus thread on BushcraftUSA using a search. It was a great thread, Thank You!!!

I think I looked at a mess kit at Mills Fleet Farm surplus section. If I remember right they were in new condition. I didn't pick one up as I have several sets of camp cooking pots.

This is the mess kit that I saw, complete with utensils.
Kokkärl m/40 & m/44 mess kit

I'll have to go back and see if they also have a canteen. I'll pick these up to go with the m/39 is an infantry mans bag/ pack if they still have them. It will make a nice set.

I am planning on restoring the unissued HB axe to go with my military axe collection

I also have a M 1896 6.6 x 55 Swedish Mauser. It is in used condition but it is in very good condition. I bought this rifle approximately 15+ years ago. According to the brass butt stock inset, it was rated in good condition, the bore, by the Swedish military the last time it was updated.

Thanks, Tom

Glad to help. Lots of tips and tricks in that thread to make the most of the old military stuff.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I still use an identical pack all the time. I'm around 230lbs and the frame was way to small for me, I stuck it in my vise and gave it a few blows with a mallet on the bottom.... corners? And it opened up with ease! Fits fine now. Thought I'd pass that along.

That is good to know. The length of it is no problem?
