Swisstool RS blade opening

Hello.......I'm looking at getting a Swisstool RS, however, one thing holds me back (I'm not able to see one in person).

I've read a number of people have difficulty actually opening the blades, etc. Some of the complaints include:

* hurts my fingers
* too tight
* have to use a ball point pen to open the tools
* kills my finger nails

Yet, those who have much praise for the Swisstool never mention this problem. I'm wondering how much of a problem this is. I should mention that I was able to check out the Spirit -- does this model work in a similar way?
Thanks for any insights. Also, are there any links that have comparison pictures (side by side) of the Spirit and RS models?

The blades are tight to get out but all you need is a good thumb nail. The blades and tools will NOT loosen over time due to the high quality of the tool .Once you get the tool/blades started its easy . Its just they have a good snap when closeing because of the strong springs . It doesnt matter which model either .My Swisstool review can be found here http://www.sosakonline.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=129&Itemid=35

I've got no complaints with mine. The tool group of the RS is ideal for me. It's solid and well made, the blade opening is a little on the stiff side, but not objectionable in any way, nowhere near the worst I've seen.

Another question involves the weight. Apprx. 3oz more than the spirit. Any thoughts on this? Is it something you could carry in your jeans pocket comfortably?

On a side note, I wonder if there are any rumors of an updated "full sized" Swisstool. It'd sure be nice if they came out with an RS model that had one-hand opening blades.

Thanks for the responses.

The Swisstool is heavy and while I'm happy to carry one sometimes in my jeans pocket it far better in a sheath on your belt .It has more tools then the Spirit . It just depends what you want it for .Think of the Swisstool as a heavy duty Sh&t hit the fan multitool and the Spirit as its lighter younger brother for general use and carry.The Swisstool scissors are bigger and open wider then the Spirits ( please note that only the RS and X model have Scissors ) .
Heres a couple of very bad photos but you get the idea , let me know if I can be of any more help .
As far as I know there are no new versions of Swisstools comming out .

Dunc5, Thanks for the pics. I can really get an idea of the size difference. Like I said earlier, I was able to hold a Spririt........but not the RS

I'd probably not be carrying it around all the time. Glove compartment might be where it is, but I'd carry it sometimes, too.

I was also able to check out a Wave and Surge....they're nice -- both rattled when I shook them (when closed). I thought that was odd, but maybe that is the design. I saw that the Wave has a belt clip accessory. I wish the RS had that as an option as well.

With my luck I'd purchase the RS and then a new model would come out. :-)
Thanks again.

Dont forget the Swisstool is cheaper too. Does not rattle :D Dont forget there are other versions of the swisstool the Standard and the X model .The Std has two blades ( one serrated and one plain ) the X has Scissors instead of a serrated blade and the RS has a curved serrated safety blade instead of a file .I carry a RS everyday and also have a Standard one as a spare , my Spirit gets used around the house but I prefer the RS .

Well.....I purchased an RS model from Amazon... for $19.99!!! I utilized the $30.00 credit you get for signing up for an Amazon VISA card. Will post my thoughts when it arrives.

That's how I bought my original Swisstool a year ago.
In fact, all of my dozen multitools were acquired at clearance, incentive offers, coupons or any other deep discount. I don't need or want them all, but this gives me an oppurtunity to try out various EDC candidates and sell off the disappointments at little or no monetary loss. On several I actually made a small profit.

On second thought, maybe I do want them all. :)

Amazon is "crazy" to offer that $30 credit. I've done it about 5 times for various things. It's not illegal and they're making the offer. I guess they make it up with customers who run a balance on their visa card.

Frankly, I never thought of doing that. If you never use them ater the first purchase, can they be canceled, or just left dormant and never used again?
Maybe it's legal, but is there a down side to this practice?

If you have "too many" credit cards that will lower your FICO credit score.

I should mention that this time I was only given a $1000 credit limit (compared to $5000 previous times). My risk-exposure in their system must be increasing. I'll just end up cancelling these in about 6 months any way.......

My RS arrives first week of January....can't wait.

Well.....technically no. I've had a leatherman micro attached to my keychain for a few years. Recently, however, I've wanted something more substantial as I've run into a few minor situations where a multitool would've been much appreciated. Also, I wanted to have something in my vehicle.

I'll check out the forum....thanks.

I luv my RS, It is a little big for the pants pockets, but you'll luv it! Nothing feels like it or looks like it (great finish) and it has the best scissors in the business IMO. I never had any problems taking out the tools, which are all made very well. I have a Leatherman kick (good for pocket), couple of winchesters (came in a kit) and my other favorite SOG powerlock-best pliers in the business IMO..

My RS arrived today.......for $19.99 :-)...... Any way, I must say that I'm impressed with the precision and engineering that went into this. Very solid and sturdy. I like it better than the spirit, but realize the spirit has it's place in the Swisstool line. I'm very pleased with my choice.

I did have one question of those who've owned an X or RS for a while....how do you sharpen some of the serraded knives.....once that wood saw blade gets dull must you send it back to have it replaced?

Also, the little instruction sheet mentioned to rinse it off right away if it gets saltwater on it, then to re-oil it. I'd do this any way, but wondered if there is a possible issue of rust......... I thought stainless steel couldn't rust.

Thanks again for the pre-purchase information provided on the board.
