Swisstool Spirit Lock Fails

I just had something interesting happen. I was loading a cooler and the ice clumped so I got out my Swisstool Spirit and used the awl to break it up. I was pounding away when the lock gave way. No injury but it made me wonder. I took it inside and tapped the locked tools on a workbench. Each one gave way with a moderate tap. I tried my Swisstool and hit each tool much harder. None gave way. I also tried my Wave. Each tool held. Has anyone else noticed this with the Spirit? Kind of a shame, I really liked this tool but now I'm a little leery of using it for hard use. Oh, BTW, I used the Swisstool to finish breaking up the ice. No problems....

Upon reading your post Gadgetman7 I immediately took my spirit out to my anvil for some serious spine whacks.

I first tested the awl, and struck it so hard on the spine I was afraid I'd break the metal. I then tested the cap lifter, phillips, saw, and knife blade. I could not get any of the locks to fail.

I appreciate your post Gadgetman7; and I am concerned with any potential lock failure on the spirit. I use my spirit for hard-duty use and will definitely be careful. I love the ergos on this multi, so I doubt I'll switch.

Thanks again for the information.

I don't have the Spirit but I can say my well used and beat up Swiss Tool has never had lock fail and I've tested it hard. Vic has a great warranty send it back with your complaint and they will send you out another or repair that one I'm sure.

My Spirit is for light to moderate edc use, and I go to the original Swisstool if I anticipate hard use. Still, it is something to bear in mind when pushing it with a Spirit.

While reading this I also took mine out and gave it a good whack, nothing budged... Phew..
So to make sure I was hitting it hard enough I took it outside and hit the large screwdriver/bottle opener as hard as I could on my trailer hitch ball, it marked the driver a bit (I hit it hard) but never gave way.. The nick is worth restoring my faith in a tool I count on daily..

Is there a chance there is some crud or something under the lock preventing it from engaging properly? I once had a chunk of tar get caught in the lock mech, but I could feel the difference as soon as I opened the blade, if I hadn't noticed the lock would not have done it's job.

I wish! Sorry I haven't posted but I've been on vacation. I actually have three Spirits. Two regular Spirit and one "S" model. Both of the regular Spirits failed but the "S" held up great. I checked for obstructions and even cleaned them and they still failed. Back to Victorinox they go. Just as a note, the two regular ones were from the very early runs. It may be something V-nox fixed. I'll let you know about the new ones. Until then I suggest that everyone check theirs to make sure that its okay.:o
