after more than a year with my spirit x the scissors no longer preform like the used to. I can still cut paper but i used to be able to cut zip ties and now i can't. i believe the hinge is still tight enough but they need to be sharpened. with the narrow opening of the jaws of the scissors how the heck to i sharpen them?

I personally use a DMT diafold (C/F) and a sharpie. It actually works wonders on all scissors! All you have to do is make sure you stay on the bevel (which is what the sharpie is for).

Ok but how do i get it inside the tiny tiny jaws of the swisstool scissors? those things are way too big to fit between them

Just open the scissors out all the way (~135*, IIRC) and fit the diafold in there. Its a tight squeeze, but it fits. I have a Swisschamp handy, so I'll try to take a picture of that to show you what I mean.

Hope that helps! It's obviously a little off due to my lack of a third hand, but I think this should make things a little clearer.

The swisstool spirit scissors do not open that far. they are not the standard SAK scissors.

Oh, oops. I completely forgot that the spirit was the one with the strange scissor mechanism, and completely missed it in your first post. Well, you could use one of those DMT Flexi-sharp sheets and accomplish the same thing. Glue it to a thin sheet of HDPE or something and you have yourself a light, maneuverable, crazy-thin sharpener that should (provided it is thin enough) work perfectly for those scissors.

You could simply unhook the torsion spring and then open the scissors.

Its realy easy, justr lift the spring out with a flat screwdriver and you are good to go.

I was looking at mine, and wondered if that spring could be pried out of the way. If it can, then it now makes me wonder if those notches and catches could be filed a bit to allow the scissors to open a bit wider. Hmmm...

You can also sharpen scissors by cutting sandpaper.

Cutting sandpaper will ruin them in short order. Correct sharpening of scissors removes metal on the bevels, not the flats. Cutting sandpaper scores the flats and does not properly grind the bevels.

I shoot a poor pic, but you get the idea. If your at it, you could file the notch down a bit, the scissors will open a bit wider.
