there seems to be relatively small difference between the two (ruler, file etc)
anyone have a favorite?

As far as I know, there is no Spirit RS. There is the RS version of the original Victorinox Swisstool, which are bigger and heavier than the Spirit.

Wait a second ... they should be labeled (L to R) Spirit X, Spirit S, and Spirit.

Don't know where those "New" and "Original" labels came from. The Spirit hasn't changed, they've just added another. Plus the X is only new to the US, it's been available in Europe for a while now.

At the time that I made the photo in 2008, it was new. In it's original context, "original" referred to the time of release. Sorry if that's confusing. The attachment has ones with the names.

The Spirit is the finest plierbased multi out there ! The Swisstool RS is also great . ( I own two Spirits and an RS ) . For daily EDC , i prefer the Spirit , sweet lines , un equaled F/F , great implements etc etc . For an end of the world scenario , I would pick the Swisstool , for EDC I'd pick the Spirit . The Spirit is very nearly as capable as the Swisstool , just a sleeker envelope .

Victorinox calls them both "Swisstools" one is the Swisstool-RS model and one the Swisstool-Spirit.
with all their variations.

they are different, I have both. Different in size and weight, and pretty noticeable too.
they have a different feel also, maybe because of the different designed handles.

they both scream "Quality" and until you hold and use them, it's not easy to tell.
When you compare them to other MTs (brands) out there, you notice too,
at least I do.
