Hi Guys, I know there have been a lot of these threads lately, but my questions are fairly quick and specific.

I have this motor:

I would like to wire it to 220V.

1: Would this switch work for my motor?

2: What gauge of wiring will I need for this? In addition, how many wires of a specific gauge must be in my cable?
From what I understand (which may be not much ;)), I will need three wires from my motor to the switch, and then 3 wires from the switch to a plug?

Any answers or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Thank you very much in advance!

You could use a leviton ms302. You could hard wire to j box with flex metal conduit. You could use sj or so cord with the appropriate connectors off the motors j box.

The switch you linked to will work, but you'll need a box to put it in...

I'd use #923-957 or #923-992 from this page

The single phase switch is out of stock for a while, the three phase switch will just have an extra contact you won't use. Magnetic switches do have some safety benefits and if properly adjusted can help protect your motor from overheating.

use #14/3 or #12/3 (better) type S, SO, ST, STW, or a similar extra hard service cable. 2 hots (switched) 1 ground (do not switch)

Thanks for the responses guys!

Unfortunately my plug is on the other side of my garage, so I have to run ~25' for it. I would assume that I would need a heavier gauge wire the longer I go? (ie. 12/3 a better choice)

12/3 would work. I prefer S cord over SJ for the added thickness but it is not needed since Service Junior is rated for 300v and Service cord is rated for 600v.

I would recommend what Doc said, check out this link:

Any electrical supply place and if you give them the specs on the motor and the distance you are running they will usually set you up with the right thing!

I used this switch and put it in a double box to accommodate the height of it!

Here is a pic of my set-up.

If you look closely on the left side you can see the cord, I think it is S instead of SJ but would have to walk out to the shop to verify and I have my Grandson this morning so can't turn loose but, a good supply man will set you up with the best for the need if you explain what you are doing.

I have some on the back of my welder( except it is heavier gauge) that I bought at the same electrical supply place. I got a deal on it told them I needed 18' so I could get to the end of the drive way if needed. The guy measured out what was left on a roll and sold me about 22' for the price of 18'. I wasn't going to complain, "you know"!

what is the distance between your plug and the main fuse panel and what gauge wire is it? the total distance from the main panel to your grinder and the amperage of the motor will ultimately decide what gauge wire needs to be used
