The amendment to the Federal Switchblade Act has passed in the Senate. Next stop will be Conference Committee.

View the amendment here: http://www.KnifeRights.org/SAmdt%201447.pdf

You deserve to give yourself a big pat on the back for this. It was your letters, faxes and emails that led to this success. This amendment will stop Customs' rulemaking and protect your pocket knives with a permanent solution.

Our thanks to Senators Cornyn, Pryor, Hatch, Vitter, Risch, Chambliss, Corker, Enzi, Barrasso, Graham, Roberts, Wyden and Crapo for co-sponsoring this amendment.

We only have one more hurdle, getting through the Conference Committee. Our legislative consultants are already working on that in cooperation with the other advocacy groups and the House members who have been supporting this effort from early on. We should know by early next week what, if anything, we need to do to help that process.

It is never a done deal in politics, until it is actually done. Having said that, we have shown ourselves to be a force to be reckoned with. Right now its time to celebrate our success so far, having overcome great odds to get to this point. We'll be in touch again once we settle on the most effective strategy for the next step.

Thank you again for all your efforts and for your contributions. If you haven't yet made a contribution or become a member of Knife Rights, please consider it now. This success did not come cheap, and we are still not yet done. We still need your financial support.

But we must remember that the battle isn't over yet.

This is great news Doug! I've emailed, phoned and faxed until I'm sure my Senators and Representatives are tired of hearing from me. But this is the way it has to be done, and my hat is off to you and the rest responsible for the victory!

Now, one more battle to go...

Awesome news! :D

I'm glad my letters and emails actually made a dent. Thanks to everyone else who contributed.

So if I understand correctly, the original Switchblade Act is being modified so that knives with assisted opening mechanisms which require the user to move the blade before the assist kicks in are now officially not switchblades?

Cool anyone know what the results were or if my senators durbin or burris voted for it( I kinda doubt it)

Good work Doug and everyone else who wrote. I'm ready to warm up the printer again whenever you give the word Doug.

Can someone translate the amendment into layman's terms? I'm reading it as including AO knives as switchblades.

I'm curious to, neither one responded to any of my letters, and Jerry Costello did, but basically agreed with customs.

Something I plan to remember when he's up for reelection.

Thank you everybody that has sent your emails out. It shows that even without confrontation, we, as a knife community, were able to cohesively stand up for what is right and protect our knives we hold so dearly.
Big thanks to everybody!!!

Just the opposite. It adds knives with a bias towards closure, which include AO and conventional one hand openers, etc., to the list of named Exceptions to the FSA. This clears up any "confusion" that might exist and defines these as specifically NOT be considered switchblades.

Awesome news!!! We have only just begun to fight!! We may have won the battle, but the war isn't over.

As we fight, we get better and more organized. But, as was said, it's not over and probably won't be for a while.

This is part of the reply I recieved from Senator Martinez.

Recently, I contacted the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regarding your concerns. CBP, a division of DHS, has examined samples of knives with spring-assisted opening mechanisms and concluded that the knives are switchblades as defined and prohibited from importation by the Switchblade Knife Act. The decision was made due to health and public safety concerns.

According to CBP, this proposed revocation will not affect knives already in the country, or those domestically manufactured regardless of how they operate. The new proposal will only affect a portion of imported knives. A comment period was open to companies and individuals on its proposal to revoke those rulings which allow the admission of knives with spring-and release- assisted opening mechanisms. That comment period closed on June 22, 2009, and CBP is currently reviewing those comments and will make a final determination on the proposal within thirty days. The final determination will be published in the Customs Bulletin and Decisions and will be effective for all affected imports made 60 days after the date of publication of the notice.

So is he way behind the curve on this issue? It is more of a non-answer than anything else. At least he responded, the other one did not.
