 It had to happen. Decades of films and books such as Rebel Without a Cause, The Blackboard Jungle and West Side Story have resulted in the switchblade automobile ignition key. Check it out.

True Story. On a recent trip, we rented a Mazda 3 four door sedan and found that the ignition key closed into a rectangular cover. Pushing a small button exposed the key so that it could be inserted into the ignition, My knowledge of automobile ignition systems is not enough for me to understand why the key constructed this way, but I think it is really neat, cool and groovy. Outtasight.

Future events can be predicted:
Parking Lot Commandos will replace Shopping Mall Ninjas as subjects of concern in cutlery forums.
High schools will see a new fad where switchblade ignition keys will be carried as items of prestige, much as switchblade combs are carried now; school boards will set new definitions of "weapon-like objects" to be restricted. Court cases will determine if schools can restrict students from carrying switchblade keys.
New York City will prohibit vehicles with switchblade ignition keys from being driven within city limits.
Legislation will be passed restricting purchase of these keys to active military personnel.
US Customs will seize all such keys brought into the country.
Faiaoga

Hasn't VW had something similar to this for years?... I believe it was a pushbutton side opening key though and not an OTF...

Yep, I've driven quite a few cars with that type of key. First thing that crossed my mind was "switchblade" too :D

here in Europe is a very common key car setup , Peugeot, Citröen, are brands that use it.
For my the trend of car keys goes is :-( bigger and bigger evry year?? why not use our phones or finger prints to open our cars?

Funny, I own a mazda 3 2012 and I spent the first 3 days playing around with the switchblade keys haha.

My igorance is showing. I had never seen any others. Next there will be an "automatic keys" collectors club.

I drive an 06 speedsix and still play with my key. Can't pull my knife out in public so the key is a great substitute.

 Beam me back to Earth, Scotty. Living in the Pacific islands and teaching science to local students has left me out of touch with the modern world and the important things in life. I really need to go back to the mainland USA and learn about switchblade keys, which Kardashian is dating which professional athlete, Snooki's plan to avert the fiscal cliff and which flavor of ice cream Honey Boo Boo is eating this week. My apologies. Faiaoga

the fob I have now has a somewhat hidden metal key. Made for valet parking so y ou can turn the trunk switch off in the glove box then lock the glove box. would be cool to have someone make a key that would fit it.

Porsche had something like this with the 993--it broke regularly and most folks hated it.

Haha...this is triple AAA, how can we help you?

Uh....my car key wont open.....You mean your car door won't open? No..well, yeah that too, but I really just need my key to open. Does it void my warranty if I open my key to adjust the pivot tension?

On a similar note, I've always wanted my ingition key to be housed inside my pocket knife. Not an automatic mechanism, but more like a traditional folder, a nice knife with a real blade and my car key. Maybe I'm weird?
