Switched back to Issued Bk4 Sheath

I have been using my leather Bk4 sheath for awhile now. I love the looks and the feel but it definitely has some cons. The most annoying one is a sap covered blade causing it to stick on the draw and while re-sheathing the knife. Being that it's a dangler makes it even worse. I have had to hold the sheath with my support hand to draw at times. Especially after chopping on pine. You can see the build up in this pic.

I use my 4 a lot out in my way back yard. Im trying to clear a 30x120 foot area out and it's covered with saplings and vines. I got my roll stamped 4 in the mail today and after seeing how classy it looked i decided to swap scales and sheaths. What a huge difference that made. My 4 is in constant motion in and out of the sheath. And the factory sheath performed like a champ.

I ended up folding the top snap behind the belt loop and not even using it Or the bottom snap for that matter. I found that I could just drop the 4 right into the sheath. No matter how many times my dangler got caught on vines and branches not once did it rotate and try to dump out the blade. I dropped the 9 into the 4s sheath and it wanted to rotate out and fall. The blade shape of the 4 definitely made a difference. I'm quite impressed with its performance. As for the leather sheath well the roll stamped 4 looks quite elegant in it. But for a constant yard use sheath I will stay with the OEM sheath. Plus the green scales match my Tanker modified yard machete.

I like the stock sheath. That leather one sure is a beauty!

I keep my top strap wrapped around the back like that too unless it is getting strapped to the outside of a pack. When doing yard work I will wrap them both around so I can just drop the knife in and out easily. If you are not doing anything too strenuous it likely isn't falling out.

I do like a loose fitting dangler for my longer blades that are in and out of the sheaths a lot. The BK4 is one of those, especially if the machete is on the other hip, or pruners if I'm clearing trails with witnesses (suburban parks and machetes aren't ideal).

Having said that I do want a loose fitting leather sheath. Maybe get one of those hybrids with a leather wrapped plastic or kydex.

A little off-topic, what machete is that with what looks like a becker inspired green handle?

That's my machete. I've had it for about 40 years. The handle broke on it so I reprofiled it and drilled it to use Becker scales. Gooder than new:)

I may have to steal that idea from you. Genius. I've had a good history of breaking and/or rotting wood handles from winter use and my excessively sweaty hands in summer.

All yours Brother. That Lil notch I put in the blades is a force multiplier also.

Same reason I like Mora factory sheaths the blade gunk factor . A sweet tight fitting kydex or leather sheath are great but if you gotta put it away dirty look elsewhere!

Agreed, factory Mora sheaths sure are easy to clean.

I have used my BK15 breaking down game and put the knife in the factory sheath dirty. I just threw the sheath in the washing machine with my clothes and it came out good as new.

Also, I have been known to carry my BK9 in a BK4 sheath. I just like the dangler setup better on a large knife. The 9 fits in the 4’s sheath just fine.
