Switching from pulleys to variable speed

Can anyone who switched from pulleys to variable speed can tell me if it made much difference? Was it worth the money?

I have KMG with standart 3 step pulleys. I can't say it's too much hassle to change speed but sometimes I want lower speed for finer grits. I am still a newbie and slower speed should help me.

Thanks,
Alex

I use 4000 grit trizac belts on my mirror finished blades and the grinder is running at about 15% Go for the variable speed motor. You wont regret it.

Its almost like having a TV Remote except easier on the thumb. I could live without it since most the time I run full bore but it sure saves alot of hassels when you do want to change speed.

i would like the pulleys if your not going to use them.I'll be out of town for a few days but if you wish to sell them I would be interested.McAhron

He's still going to need pulleys to run the power from the motor to the grinder.

Just run the belt in the center groove. If you want more top or bottom end you can still use the pulleys to accomplish that.

Mike gave you a valuable suggestion.Keep the multi-pulleys,too.Low end torque is not as high on many variable systems. If you are going to be running real slow for some polishing jobs,go to the lower speed pulley grooves. The highest speeds are hardly used by most makers anyway.Fast is not nearly as important as slow!(ask any happy girlfriend/wife)

Variable speed. I just changed over and don't know why I waited so long. It's
like going from a tractor to a new Caddy.

That's the truth. I put a VS setup on a Blademaster grinder some time ago and it had three step pulleys.
When I was finished hooking it up I ran it so see if everything was OK.

I then set the belt in the "overdrive"(high speed) pulley grooves and fired it up, then just turned that thing all the way up.

It scared me so bad I jumped out of the way. I'd never seen a belt grinder run that fast before, thought the contact wheel was going to explode.

I set the pulleys back in the center grooves for 1:1 ratio immediatly after that episode.
But now I only use that grinder for small wheel grinding and that has a seperate pulley that is even lower than the three speed pulley low speed.
