How do these two compare in terms of toughness? I'm leaning more toward the SwitchPlier because of the kewl factor. But which will be more reliable in an emergency situation? Also, if the spring breaks on the SwitchPlier, will the pliers still be functional? Thank you for your time.

I would say PowerPlier is a little tougher, PowerLock tougher again.

Definitely wins kewl factor!!! :D

Personally: while I suspect they'd be about equal, the PowerPliers with less to go wrong would get my vote.
Objectively: Switch pliers might deploy faster, depending on conditions... and what tool you want to use.

Yes, but with PITA manual operation...;)

As always, YMMV

Thank your for the information, Bobby B! I guess I'll go with the PowerPlier Deluxe first, as it is cheaper. Thanks again!

Diamond Cut II,

I have both a PowerLock, and a Deluxe PowerPlier. The PowerLock sits in my knife-drawer, while the Deluxe PowerPlier sits in it's sheath on my belt. The Deluxe PowerPlier is smaller and lighter than the PowerLock, so you would probably tend to carry it more.

Aside from the amount of tools and their size difference, some of the other differences between the two are that the blades of the PowerPlier don't "lock", and the PowerPlier doesn't have the pivoting handle covers (wings) that the PowerLock has.
