How do these three compare in terms of toughness? I'm leaning more toward the SwitchPlier because of the kewl factor. But which will be more reliable in an emergency situation? Also, if the spring breaks on the SwitchPlier, will the pliers still be functional? Thank you for your time.

The PowerLock is probably stronger, since it is the biggest, but I like the (Deluxe) Pocket PowerPlier the best as it's a little smaller and lighter for EDC.

The switchplier is a neat gadget but seems to be more of a light-duty toy than a truly useful tool.

If you are worried about a real "emergency situation" I'd go with the Powerlock (or V-nox Swisstool) over the Switchplier, kewl factor be damned.

If you desire quick one-handed access to the pliers I'd recommend you take a look at some of Gerber's designs instead of SOG, as they allow the pliers to be snapped into position quickly.

I thought that was one of SOG's features, one hand opening. I've heard it said you can easily flip it open one handed, Balisong style.

Of course I don't own one (really, really want one) so I cant speak from experience.

I still enjoys cutting pennies using my powerlock's wirecutter.

I would not choose the SwitchPlier for anything critical. It's neat and light, but not built for abuse.

Both PowerPlier models and the PowerLock are very tough. The PowerLock is the toughest, but I think any of them would stand up to just about anything.

As far as one-handed opening, I always open my PowerLock like a balisong. The geared jaws make all of three models easy to flip open or closed with one hand.
