Sword cane shortening?

Being a close to the ground sort of guy, my proper length for a cane is around 34 1/2 inches. Is the heavy duty sword cane designed so that it would be possible to shorten it from the lower end?

There is extra room from sword tip to the bottom of the cane, so yes it can be modified if you are careful.

I researched this about a year ago. I couldn't find anyone who had successfully shortened their cane. One person reported ruining his cane trying to shorten it. If you look at the bottom, how do you actually do it? Sawing off the end cap? How do you reattach another? How do you keep the blade from rattling around if it opens into a regular rubber cane tip? I keep mine from rattling by putting a few cottonballs down the tube a couple of times a year. There needs to be a solid bottom to pack down the cottonballs and keep the rattling down to a minimum. You can have anything done professionally, but how much would it cost?

The HD Sword Cane is held in place using rubber washers. As long as these are in good shape it should not rattle - I sell a lot of these and demonstrate this by vigorous shaking. If you trim from the bottom, you will have to find a replacement for the tip. A friend of mine, who is a very serious individual, shortened his from the top, but had to do some careful radiusing because of the slight taper. Was not a problem for him because he used to run a knife company.

Mike, would you happen to know the OD of the shaft about 3 inches up from the bottom?

The outside diameter is graduated. Just under 3.5 at the the top and 3.25 at the bottom.
When I measured it a year or so ago there seemed to be an inch or so at the bottom (or top) that could be cut. I can't remember for sure though.

I used mine for about a week or so after surgery. The cane sword is pretty heavy compared to a regular cane. I don't think I would use it routinely at 65 and older. Who knows though.

Seems more logical to cut from the top now that you mention it.
The rattle that I and other (see Youtube commentary) HD cane sword OWNERS have experienced has nothing to do with the rings at the top. When you actually use this to walk it rattles towards the bottom. It is not a major rattle, but it is somewhat aggravating. It also bothers me because I naturally assume there may be eventual wear and tear/dulling towards the tip. I looked at it pretty closely. No obvious rub marks. The blade definitely has a couple irregular, wavy areas on the edge, and some grind issues, but for the price I am very satisfied.

If you sand the end cap a little to make it more graduated at the end, you slip a conventional crutch tip over the end. This should lengthen it an inch and 1/2, at least.

Talked with a customer at the Pittsburgh Gun Show this weekend, that had shortened his HD Sword Cane from the bottom. He heated the tip with hot water until he could remove it, shortened the cane, then replaced the tip using silicone to attach it. He is very happy with the way it performs and uses it all the time. Thought I'd pass this on.

I think I will try this after I wear down my tip down close to the metal end.
