Do any of you cantinistas have any experience or first-hand knowledge regarding currently available defensive canes with a concealed sword/dagger inside? I've looked at AC's catalogue and don't know how much hype to believe about their quality, etc...

Just asking...:D

They are evil and are only used to murder people.
I also can't own a .50 BMG, specifically named 'assault' rifles, Blowguns, or any handgun not put on a list(you can get on the list if you pay shakedown money to the state).
I also cannot possess kangaroo leather, horsemeat, duck or gooseliver pate and too many other things to mention.

Sorry I wan't much help. Just had to let some steam off.

Brian they just have to be good enough for one use anyway since when/if it's ever used the sword cane will be confiscated. I haven't checked out AC's offerings for a while so I don't know what they're going for these days but a sword cane that's on the cheap side would be the best I think.
The reason being if it's not too expensive it could be left where it was used as long as there weren't any prints on it or anything.
But then we probably don't have the same mindset about, or how to use, or what to use one for.;) :D

Brian... I used to do a lot of research on katanas, and saw lots of stuff about sword canes on sword forums website. (ooops... I placed the link here, and realise after posting that perhaps doing so was a faux pas...) They had some that were good quality and commercially available, and they always have some swordmakers around who can make you an extraordinary cane sword. If you were to use a quality tempered steel with a "Dan Koster" edge or two, it would be a formidable weapon... Alas, as mentioned above, they aren't one of the edged weapons most appreciated by the law! :D

over here the sheeple have made them illegal to buy, sell, loan, transport, bequeath, or otherwise move or dispose of such evil murder tools as sword canes, automatic knives, butterfly knives (that circular flip to open them is reeely scarey), shuriken, and belt buckle knives. you can own one under a grandfather clause as long as it never gets used & is never off your property. strangely enough, i see quite a few 'novelty walking sticks' with pointy steel cores for sale on ebay.....haven't got one myself yet. in the EU they are still available & i've seen some quite nice ones for sale, expensive tho, especially as it probbaly would be confiscated by customs on arrival.

You can spend hundreds on them, and there are a variety of custom ones available. The best bang for the buck and the strongest are the Cold Steel models. It has a cruciform (cross-shaped) blade that is extremely strong. I don't think the AC model compares, but then again Yvsa has a point (no pun intended) on possibly only using it once. In that case you probably wouldn't want your monogram on it. ("Hey, that's Brian's sword cane sticking out of that guy!":D)

They used to make one with an ebony head, but that has been discontinued. If you can find one you can probably get a deal on it. They still carry one with a removable stainless steel head, and one with a skull head, which looks ultra silly to me anyway. YMMV. The SS one is a good value. Jeff at Cutlery Shoppe in Boise stocks them (and so do lots of other folks), but I like to deal with him. MSRP is like $119 I think, but you should be able to get one for about $89 if you look around.

Like balisongs and automatics and everything else that's cool they are illegal in lots of places, but I always figure it's better to ask forgiveness than permission anyway. ;)

Type "cane sword" into the Sword Forums International search engine, and bingo...; lots of nice photos and links!

Thanks for the link, Steve; you're a great enabler...! :D Those are beautiful, and high quality, and I'll have to get one after researching the site. Being that this would be a functional tool for me rather than a wall hanger, I won't need to get the "gold embellished" or other bling bling options. Does anyone here have a Burger cane? If so, I'd appreciate it if you would post your impressions. I'm particularly interested to know whether it would be effective (and "unbreakable") as an impact weapon when using the blade would be overkill, no pun intended.

I'm sure that they're highly illegal in Italy, but I would be interested in the breakdown option, as I oftentimes travel to 3rd world counties for vacation, and oftentimes hear about people I've met in many places being robbed at knifepoint, etc.

Hey, PUSH MY BUTTON. JERK MY CHAIN!
Even a 'Zatoichi' is illegal.
Carrying a firearm is a misdemenor (first time), but numchucks are a felony!

Now that that's off my chest, carrying a sword cane is a bad idea. They are slow to deploy and require training and practice to use effectivly. Better to have a regular old hooked cane and somewhere on the net is, for lack of a better word, a training manual for cane fighting.

I would bet that they are considered concealed carry in Chicago. If you are going to carry concealed, it might as well be a firearm...
but you don't want to break the law in Chicagoland.

I would bet that if you carry the sword on the dash in NC - exposed - it would not be against the law.
Dangerous, yes.
legal?

Check out the Last Legend Blind Warrior Mark II (http://lastlegend.com/ll/ll015.htm). I've heard very good things about their swords, and the description they give certainly sounds quality. 1060 steel, tempered, full, double pinned tang, leather covering. Looks sweet too. I haven't personally handled one, but the only complaint I've heard is that the handle is symmetrical, so there's no way to tell without looking which side is the sharp one.

As far as carry, concealed or otherwise, I live in Vermont! Woohoo! Seriously though, it's great to be in a state with a crime rate so low that virtually no one (even us liberals) sees a need for weapons control.

Cold Steel makes a very nice one. Is more or less a thrusting weapon as the blade is triangular in shape. But should be very strong. Atlanta Cutlery use to carry a sword umbrella. I bought one for my instructor and it was well made. A wicked little 18" more or less ice pick.

If you're considering this for actual use, Steve, you may be better served with an actual cane. It will be nearly as effective (possibly more effective, actually) and won't be used against you in a court of law after the fact. After all, it's just a cane, right?

If it's for pleasure rather than business, I'd go for the CS. I may buy one myself someday...for pleasure, not for business. I actually considered getting one for my great-grandmother one time but was talked out of it by my grandmother and mother, who assured me (probably correctly) that she'd be liable to use it on us. :)

The Crawford Survival Staff can be used as a cane, since it's modular. Leave off the upper section. Screw the dagger into the tip at the bottom where it is much less likely to be noticed. You can also get a t-handle for the cane.

Yes, I got one. Back when they were "only" $200.

I can testify to the quality of the Last Legend Line as well as the Canemaster's Canes. You can buy a hog cane and make your own mods for a lot cheaper but sometimes it's just nice to have something really cool already made right down to the little beady eyes like mine has on its snake head. :D ;)

Since sword canes are illegal anyways, may as well carry one with a .45 ACP in it- like a diver's bangstick.

Hm, make that a .410. Snakes.

Ever consider that the crime rate is low in part BECAUSE everyone's packing heat! Ban it and see what happens to your crime rate.

Those are some statistics I need to look at some time. Off the top of my head though, I'd say that it's not really that sort of a deterent around here. Sure, no one is going to rob the families that have friggin arsenels, but (and I apologize for the stereotype, but it's pretty true here) the people with the most guns are out in the boonies and probably wouldn't be robbed anyway. The places were you're less likely to find firearms (rich neighborhoods, the "city") still have very low crime. Guns really aren't a thing here, so to speak - not something to control, and not something to worry about. At least that's my perception.
