Greetings fellow swords and knife enthusiasts. So I am in the process of designing a sword I would like to have commissioned. I am currently between two sword designs right now, either a katana, or a one and a half handed long sword style blade with more of a fantasy design. I want the sword to be something unique, looks good enough to be a show piece but definitely usable. Cause let’s be honest, what’s the point in having a sword if you can’t use it! So my question is to you fellows out there, what steel should I use, I’m between t-10, L-6, or S5.. of course I want it to be tough enough to out up with some abuse and hold an edge, I am also curious if it is possible to fold two of the steel types such as S5 and L6 into a Damascus steel to get sort of the best of both?

Really, you are asking questions here, best answered by the person who will be making your sword.

The better answers will come from the one forging the steel, making the Damascus, and making the sword.

Really, what budget are we talking, and who would you want to make it??

I would make different recommendations based on desired design, desired steel, and actual uses ...... but all of those questions would start with... Budget???

Those are very different choices in design. Is your katana design going to be that different or superior to what's readily available? If not go for the other design.

Listen pal, you can't just pick a steel like that. You gotta discuss with the 'smith you choose what's gonna be the best steel to get the results you -

Probably around $3000-$4000

- oh hey, hi there Mr. Banthafodder! Hope you had a happy new year; I know I did! Yep, a real rootin' tooter! Say, that's a nice moustache you got there, it really compliments those Christmas socks. Very dashing. Did I hear you say something about a getting yourself a sword? Well, word on the street is that anybody who's anybody gets their swords made out of titanium now, but you gotta know a guy who knows a guy to get ahold of one. Sounds pretty snazzy to me. A guy'd be the talk of the town trimming hedges with something like that! Wowee, a titanium sword, that would really be somethin, right? Right?

There is a thread just below asking almost the same question. It might be worth perusing....
