I don't know much, but there has been a rash of crap coming out of Hong Kong, Shanghai, and China on Ebay for a while. Best to ask at Swordforum . His feedback is private? Sounds fishy to me.

hey guys,

i'd bet kothimoda that there is a Chinese replica.

the artificial aging
artificial hada, looks like grinding or watermarks!
the blade shape is all off...

i'll not go into all that is wrong with it.

stay away. it's a scam. and how can you keep your feedback private?

I have been researching Japanese blades lately just for interest and I remembered that some of you chaps really like your swords so :

Any idea on the value, quality etc of this !!

Just interested so not a real urgency !!

Looks like a fake. The tip isn't right. Plus others more knowledgable than I put together other clues that suggest this is something to be avoided.

A LOT of fakes come out China and Hong Kong.

Actually, the Chinese and Japanese use similar artistic representations of dragons, so I would not be too quick to discount it for that reason. But still, it pays to be skeptical.

The tsukamaki doesn't look right, even for an 'old blade'. It is poorly done, and the ito looks like the cheap cotton stuff I can get from any fabric store. Can't say anything about the other details, but one thing's for sure - if it's coming out of Hong Kong and the feedback for the seller is private, then it's a fake.

Fact is, just about every 'japanese blade' coming out of Hong Kong is a fake.

I agree. Especially about the feedback being private. The one thing I've learned about folks who know Japanese swords is that they are very concerned about anything they sell, or buy, being considered fake, and they are normally very open to demonstrating their integrity.

I thought the micky mouse on the pommel cap was interesting.
I thought the head on the scabbard looked like an antelope or some such.

This blade looks exactly like 98% of the katanas Ebay lists,
which are all current Chinese manufacture.
Search Ebay for 'katana' & look how similar they all are.

OTOH, the folded steel seems to have an attractive pattern
& I see only one fold flaw on the side shown.
I'd pay maybe $60 for this with shipping included
to have the folded steel to play with;
and find out if it's good enough to use as blank material.
(no fatal flaws & hardenable)
If I -trusted- it was good steel I'd pay a little more.
I have several swords that would be considered tourist trash,
but I bought them planning to one day regrind them &
add new furnishings.

Sword sized folded steel is expensive from any sources I've seen.
Knife size can be had, depending on it's character & the source,
for a fairly reasonable price.

It is a Chinese fake.

If you want a Japanese sword, get one from a reputable dealer that will stand behind what they sell. I sell them on my site Japanesesword.com, but you should also check out nihonto.com and ricecracker.com both are good J-sword dealers i recommend.
