Sword Falls from wall and kills teen

I emailed the above link to several freinds. One just responded with the following:

"Whoa!!!
What a tragedy.
I was given a samurai sword from a friend of mine that was given to him by his father who was a marine. This sword was supposedly taken from a Japanese officer at Iwo Jima in WW11.
It was old and the leather scabbard was worn and the small decorative chain that held the piece in the scabbard was rusty.
In hanging the sword horizontally on the wall the drywall nail gave a little bit and the sword fell. My hand was probably less than 8 inches away when it fell so I caught it quite easily and quickly.
Unfortunately the rusty chain broke and the scabbard opened up a couple of inches.
As I was re-hanging the sword I felt my forearm was wet and when I looked down the sword had almost taken off my ring finger and had I not had a wedding ring on it might have done it.
The blade was razor sharp, I didn't even feel the cut, a 60 year old weapon almost got me. It required 13 sutures to keep me from bleeding.
Nothing like the story above but I learned very quickly that decorative swords are not just decorative, these are weapons and should be treated as such. I have several on my walls as well but not where they can fall on to anyone, a Damascus I am not."

And this guy is a doctor! And now divorced with no ring to catch another sword.

Perhaps a motto? "If a sword falls, remove your hand before the sword removes it for you!"

This story, paired with the thread on John Powell's walls o' khukuries, just gives me the willies.

This is why I do the following with my swords:

I make sure to properly attach the display backboard to the wall, and then I always make the displays to have a safety chain that prevents the sword from falling off. It's a simple solution that works.

That is a tragedy.
Also, to continue living, knowing that one was mainly responsible for such a preventable death, has got to be very hard on the parents.

PS.
Parents almost always tell their children to not play ball in the house, and many simply never listen :(

If a sword falls in outer space can anyone hear you scream?

Helluva tragedy and preventable at that. Can you imagine how the poor mom feels after buying the swords for her son....:( :( :( :(

Please be careful with these sharp pointy things!
Don't tell Australia!

it's a terrible thing to have someone die...

but i've been thinking about this a while, and am wondering things. without more pictures... or details, the "playing kickball in a room" and replica sword coming off the wall hard enough to take out his neck/head? mmmm. i wonder. my thought, nasty as it is, one of the other people was swinging around the sword, in fun or anger, or something, and did it. the ball playing was just "the story" that came up. i'd like to be wrong actually.

a very sad story

A real shame. Talk about a freak accident! But I think it's legit. Just a small cut in the right place can kill anyone.

Sad.

Carotid, jugular, femoral are the exsanguination targets in a lot of knife training. Cut doesn't have to be deep nor long, and a pressure bandage isn't going to help you.

A shame.

Here's more information on that:

I told Hatsumi Sensei about this accident tonight, and he was very concerned.
He said that basically, one must treat all weapons with the proper respect or they will kill you. That's why all of his swords and spears are wired to the wall, not just hanging on pegs. They are not toys and yes, even a small cut can kill you.
