I emailed the above link to several freinds. One just responded with the following:
"Whoa!!!
What a tragedy.
I was given a samurai sword from a friend of mine that was given to him by his father who was a marine. This sword was supposedly taken from a Japanese officer at Iwo Jima in WW11.
It was old and the leather scabbard was worn and the small decorative chain that held the piece in the scabbard was rusty.
In hanging the sword horizontally on the wall the drywall nail gave a little bit and the sword fell. My hand was probably less than 8 inches away when it fell so I caught it quite easily and quickly.
Unfortunately the rusty chain broke and the scabbard opened up a couple of inches.
As I was re-hanging the sword I felt my forearm was wet and when I looked down the sword had almost taken off my ring finger and had I not had a wedding ring on it might have done it.
The blade was razor sharp, I didn't even feel the cut, a 60 year old weapon almost got me. It required 13 sutures to keep me from bleeding.
Nothing like the story above but I learned very quickly that decorative swords are not just decorative, these are weapons and should be treated as such. I have several on my walls as well but not where they can fall on to anyone, a Damascus I am not."
And this guy is a doctor! And now divorced with no ring to catch another sword.
Perhaps a motto? "If a sword falls, remove your hand before the sword removes it for you!"
