Sword Falls Off Wall, Kills Fla. Teen

I hope that everyone realizes now that swords shouldn't be hung above furniture.

a very unfortunate accident, i feel sorry for the family :(

worst part is, this was a *preventable* accident, either by not hanging a bladed instrument on the wall, or not playing ball in a room with a sword on the wall, common sense really....

still, i don't mean to diminish the family's suffering in this sad time for them, but this could have been prevented.....

Makes about as much sense as hanging a loaded shotgun with the safety off on the wall above the couch.

That sucks. I imagine the "sword" to be one of those Atlanta Cutlery recreations, but it could have been anything.

The thing is, that sort of accident could have occured with with almost any object hanging on the wall, a framed picture, a clock, a flat-screen television...

Thats horriable, i really feel bad for the family
people really be careful where they put things like that.

That really stinks. I can't even imagine losing a child. That would have to be the worst feeling ever.

May God be with the family.

Household accidents always top the list. Whether a skateboard, a lawnmower, sword, or cieling fan, when your number is up - it's up. But, it always sucks when it happens to a kid.

Having a couple of rambunctious cats also makes you re-think where you are going to display your collection.

Man thats a shame...
i would never display any of my cutlery unless they were put in a locked display case

That's aweful. Most cheap swords usually aren't very sharp, but it sounds like this one must have been sharp and heavy. Or it had a very pointy tip that caught him. The shame is the sword probably could have feel on him in a number of ways and he'd be alright, but it struck him in a lethal fashion. :(

I don't have any swords hanging up in my house, or knives, but this type of thing is going to make me look around to see if there is anything that could fall on one of my kids.

I can see just how that could happen. My son bought an oak quarterstaff at the Renaissance Fair when he was 16. He kept it on the wall above his bed supported by a couple large nails hammered into the wall. It wouldn't have taken much to jostle it off one of the nails to swing down and bonk him good. I can see a kid doing the same thing with his sword.

a week earlier he narrowly avoided a rollercoaster accident after one of his friends predicted it would crash before they got on.

It's unfortunate that some people NEED to see those kind of things to remind them that blades are not toys...

Hope you'll all double check your displays AND their location

I was thinking about that movie also.

Does anyone else think that the story about the ball is BS?--that the reality is the kids were fooling around with the blade and lost control THAT way?
