Lenny, the terms "roommate" and "partner" are currently used to fuzz over the distinctions inherent in "boy/girlfriend" or "spouse" or "husband/wife". Saying roommate could mean someone else living in an apartment and helping pay the rent or it could mean a more serious relationship, but the roommates may not want to specify which it is.

If I was her boyfriend, I would be very careful which kind of sword I used and when and on whom.
