hello all. i am new to the "sword scene" but i do have my fair share of blades. i am not looking to get into anything to serious or expensive right away. Therefore if have a swrod in mind that i can use also as a machete or other type of all purpose tool. i was look ing at the timber wold full tang ninja sword when also saw the UNited Cutlery black ninja sword. they seem to be identical in the pictures i have seen as well as the sheaths that come with them. they also both have great reviews. can recommend one to me or tell me which one is better? the united cutlery one is a little bit more expensive. are you just paying the extra for a brand name? thanks

I had something similar to the ronin sword when i was younger and it survived most of the things i did to it, but if i could go back with what i know now i would have gotten something else. If your just getting it to mess around and use as a machete i would recommend one of cold steels machetes. Edges come alittle thick but they preform well for the price and will outperform most of the budk ninja type offerings.

ill have to check those out. but between the two, does anyone know why the united sword is priced higher. this is mostly just for fun and for the look its looks. im willing to experiment with it since its so inexpensive. i know you get what you pay for but its not for anything too serious. it will most likely make an interesting bottle opener later in my life haha

In my opinion, you should save your money, and not bother with United Cutlery, or BudK in general. I've never seen a single UC piece I thought was worth the steel it was made from. There may be exceptions, of course, but my experience has been downright negative.

The Cold Steel machetes would be a better buy for sure at that price point.

Other than that, you'd be best off saving at least 100ish for a good starter sword. Swords are expensive. If you like that style, you may eventually end up saving up for a rodent rucki or a scrapyard scrapizashi, or commissioning a custom.

-edit- I almost forgot. There were some decent-ish pieces by Ontario, IIRC. Might see if you can find one of those.

If you want a sword-like machete for backyard mayhem you'd be better off with a Condor Barong or Bush Cutlass for not a whole lot more.

wow guys. thanks so much for all the feedback to help a newb like me. i will take into account everything said on here and will for sure let you guys know what i get. much respect to you guys for reaching out and helping.

*i think part of the problem was that i didnt know how to describe the style of this sword. so now that i know i can save up for something of higher quality

One thing I've heard a lot of from people looking for a "apocalypse sword" is they want one they can also use for a machete or general purpose tool.

Well, why not just a humble machete?

Machetes are used by people every day in the wilder parts of the world, for clearing jungle paths, butchering, building shelter, cutting up some kindling, and yes... as a weapon.

You really can't beat a quality machete for the price. You get a lot of good utility for little money.

They do make good weapons. Ask the Colombians, Guatemalans, and Rwandans. There have been many thousands of people hacked up by machetes. The Cubans have even used machetes as cavalry weapons.

The machete is more-or-less a cutlass adapted to agricultural use and also has similarities to the Chinese dao class of swords as well as the European Medieval falchions.

IMO get a good machete from either Condor or Ontario (because I have and like both) and look for the ones with thicker blades of about 1/8" thick or more. You need a thicker blade for sword-ish use because it helps parry or block an opponent's weapon. If you want a better point for stabbing, it can be easily modified. Remember, you're not going to drop down $500 on a machete so you can afford to experiment.
